Description

The company is hiring a founding engineer to own and build the data platform behind its product. There are currently three product engineers, and the systems already handle very large volumes.

Queries that join, window, and aggregate up to 100M rows (100GB) must return in seconds, in real time.

This is a building role rather than a typical SRE, systems, or backend position, and you would set your own direction on the hardest infrastructure problems. You would work alongside product engineers to ship features that scale for some of the largest consumer brands in the world.

Responsibilities

  • Own and scale the platform layer from the start, setting your own roadmap.
  • Build services able to ingest up to a trillion jobs per month.
  • Diagnose ClickHouse CPU and memory performance using detailed flamegraphs.
  • Materialize the attribution dataset so it can join, window, and aggregate billions of rows in real time.
  • Design and build a SQL dialect that customers or agents can use to query the data directly.
  • Work with product engineers to ship product that scales.

Requirements

  • Very strong coding skills. The team mainly uses Python, so you should also be comfortable with faster languages.
  • Deep knowledge of OLTP and OLAP databases, specifically Postgres and ClickHouse.
  • Hands-on experience at scale, having seen where data-heavy systems break.
  • Pragmatic and customer-focused, with a clear sense of what customers need and what can be left out.
  • 3+ years of experience.
  • Skills in Amazon Web Services (AWS), PostgreSQL, Python, and ClickHouse.
  • US citizen or visa holder only.

Conditions

You will implement what you design and write a lot of code, not just architect systems.

The team works on daily and weekly timelines rather than multi-quarter migrations.

The role is not a fit for anyone who prefers working remotely over in person. The team works from its NYC office.

Equal opportunity: applicants are considered without regard to protected characteristics.
