Description

The company is looking for a summer intern researcher in machine learning for automation to help build and deploy learning methods for intelligent robots used in manufacturing.

The role needs solid expertise in both machine learning and physical robotics, plus an interest in applying them to messy, real-world robot problems. The work supports next-generation automation and flexible production systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply learning methods for robots, such as reinforcement learning, imitation learning and learning from demonstration.
  • Use deep networks for robot sensing, planning and control.
  • Apply learning to grasping, dexterous manipulation, mobile manipulation and coordinated motion.
  • Work on contact-rich assembly and force-sensitive tasks using learning-based methods.
  • Support the team's technical work through presentations, intellectual property, technical documentation and publications.

Requirements

  • You are working toward a master's or PhD in machine learning, physical robotics, computer science or a closely related field at a leading university.
  • You will graduate between August 2026 and June 2027.
  • You can work full time, 40 hours per week.
  • You have a strong academic and applied machine learning background, including experience training policies for grasping, manipulation, contact-rich assembly or other robot skills.
  • You are strong in Python, C++ and PyTorch or TensorFlow, with system development experience.
  • Preferred: experience with dexterous and multi-contact manipulation.
  • Preferred: experience with mobile manipulation in dynamic or unstructured settings.
  • Preferred: experience with learning-based control for contact-rich assembly.
  • Preferred: experience with simulation-to-real transfer and data-efficient learning.
  • Preferred: experience with foundation-model robotics, such as vision-language-action models, transformer-based control, world models and generative AI for robot planning and execution.
  • Preferred: experience in industrial or automotive manufacturing.
  • Preferred: publications in leading conferences such as ICRA, RSS, CoRL or NeurIPS.

Conditions

Hybrid role: you report to Warren, MI at least 3 times per week, or more often if the business requires it.

Work authorization: the company does not provide immigration sponsorship for this role, now or in the future. This covers direct sponsorship, naming the company as employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization that needs a written submission or other immigration support from the company, such as H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN or J-1. Do not apply if you will need such sponsorship.

Export control: the role is subject to export control restrictions and requires you to be a U.S. person, meaning a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee.

Relocation benefits apply if you are selected.

If selected, you may need to complete a role-related assessment and or a pre-employment screening before you start.
