Description

The company builds autonomous drones and is a leader in autonomous flight, with a team spanning AI, hardware, software, and operations.

This is a Winter 2027 internship on the embedded software team. Firmware here is the low-level layer that connects the autonomy algorithms to the sensors and mechanical hardware in the drones and accessory products.

The team owns much of the software stack: bare-metal and RTOS microcontroller code (mostly STM32), embedded Linux and Android on Qualcomm and Nvidia SoCs, Linux kernel maintenance, and bring-up of new electronics. It works closely with the hardware group and the wider software organization, building the base that other software engineers rely on.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship the embedded software that runs on the drone and on the growing accessory lines, such as the company Dock.
  • Characterize, integrate, and validate core subsystems like cameras, radios, and flight controllers.
  • Bring up new hardware and track down its bugs.
  • Write interfaces and drivers for sensors, cameras, and other devices.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience writing firmware or embedded code for a physical device.
  • Working knowledge of C++ as applied to embedded systems.
  • Working knowledge of Python for test, experiments, and tooling.
  • Ability to write clean code with sensible abstraction boundaries.
  • Ability to read schematics and use an oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and multimeter.
  • Willingness to take ownership when tackling hard problems.
  • Nice to have: embedded Linux userspace or kernel development experience.
  • Nice to have: debugging at the ARM assembly level.

Conditions

Open to junior, senior, and MS-level college students who have industry experience with device-level embedded software or firmware.

The role is a collaborative, fast-moving internship.

Hourly pay is $47 for undergraduates, $53 for graduate students, and $58 for PhD students. Final pay depends on skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, and experience.

For some positions, pay may vary by regional location.

The company values diversity and is committed to an inclusive culture.
