Description

The company is a global leader in science, with annual revenue above $40 billion.

The Laboratory Equipment Division makes lab equipment and consumables that customers rely on for speed, reliability and safety.

In this hands-on R&D role you will design, develop and maintain embedded microprocessor-based control systems for the company's cold storage and ultra-low temperature (ULT) products.

You will work with other engineers and technicians to build high-performance, energy-efficient, compliant cold storage products.

You will work closely with NPD design leadership and peers in product management, product engineering, quality and regulatory to define hardware and electrical systems, write embedded software, maintain traceability and meet customer, performance and regulatory expectations across the product lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build embedded control circuit boards and related circuits for ULT freezers and cold storage platforms.
  • Produce schematics, design analyses, bills of materials, assembly drawings and other required documents.
  • Write performance and qualification test methods, run the experiments and evaluate the results.
  • Write controller firmware and HMI designs in embedded C, plus C++ with the Qt framework, for ULT freezers and cold storage platforms.
  • Shape electrical systems to meet customer needs, launch commitments and target costs.
  • Build modular, scalable and reusable designs that work across several product platforms.
  • Work with refrigeration and mechanical engineers through every stage of the toll-gate NPD process.
  • Prepare circuit, software and functional testing with contract manufacturers.
  • Support products made at several global facilities.
  • Help shape component, subsystem and system technology roadmaps.

Requirements

  • Take part in formal design reviews of electrical controls requirements, schematics and layouts, along with FMEA, DFM, DFT and related analyses.
  • Prepare, review and release formal requirements, design and qualification documents.
  • Design systems to meet regulatory and certification requirements such as UL, IEC and FDA.
  • Build a habit of safety, quality, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Have 0-2 years of hands-on experience developing embedded control systems for electromechanical products.
  • Have experience with analog and digital circuit design, prototyping, qualification and commercialization planning for electronic controls.
  • Have experience with high-speed circuit design (USB, Ethernet, LVDS) and analog or mixed-signal design.
  • Have firmware and software development experience for electronic controls.
  • Have analyzed empirical test data to guide design decisions.
  • Be familiar with electronic analysis methods, related instrumentation and technical documentation.
  • Be familiar with Lean and PPI methods and continuous improvement systems.
  • Have designed embedded microcontroller-based PCBAs using the PADS layout tool.
  • Have experience programming in C, C++, Python and JavaScript.
  • Oversee prototype construction and run performance testing to judge whether concepts are practical.
  • Be familiar with IEC 60601 design practices and other electrical safety standards.
  • Bring strong analytical, problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Use development tools such as Confluence, Jira, Git and Microsoft Office.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate well across functions.
  • Stay organized while managing several projects at once in a busy setting.
  • Show commitment to safety, quality and operational excellence.

Conditions

Role is based in the Laboratory Equipment Division and is on-site.

Standard schedule, Monday to Friday.

Up to 10% domestic travel.

Work is done in a mix of office and lab settings with GMP safety standards in force.
