Description

This is a Database Engineer role, Deployment and Support, in the Digital Technology Service Quality team, based in Barcelona, Spain, on a hybrid model. Internal grade 2.2.

You will build, deploy and support the company's enterprise database estate, which stores its most critical data, from automated provisioning and high-availability design to tuning and incident response.

The databases run manufacturing, research and enterprise systems worldwide, and the persistence layer you build is used by thousands of users.

The company is a global biopharmaceutical business operating in about 100 countries, focused on human health and treatments and vaccines for millions of people.

The team works across on-premises, hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy databases as code with Terraform, Ansible and migration tools such as Liquibase, Flyway and DACPAC, and move changes from Dev to Production through CI/CD pipelines that validate and test them.
  • Design, run and test high availability and disaster recovery for SQL Server (Always On availability groups), Oracle (Data Guard), PostgreSQL replication and cloud-native failover, so recovery commitments are proven.
  • Provide L2/L3 operational support and take part in the on-call rotation, diagnosing and fixing replication failures, performance problems, backup issues and corruption.
  • Tune performance and capacity using execution plans, wait statistics and native tools such as Query Store, AWR and pg_stat_statements, and work with application teams on indexing and queries.
  • Carry out patching, upgrades and lifecycle management to meet compliance SLAs, and lead end-of-life remediation across the estate.
  • Put in place database security and compliance controls, including encryption, auditing, privileged access control and data masking, and keep validation documentation for GxP-regulated systems.
  • Automate routine work with PowerShell, Python and platform APIs, writing reusable, production-grade tools that remove manual effort.
  • Connect databases to monitoring platforms (Datadog, Splunk) and define alerts and dashboards that support proactive operations.
  • Own what you deploy from day one through day-two operations.

Requirements

  • Proven experience deploying and supporting enterprise databases (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL or MySQL) in large, global environments.
  • Regulated industry experience is a plus.
  • Hands-on skills in database deployment, high availability (Always On, RAC, replication), backup and recovery, performance tuning and security.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, where Terraform is preferred, along with schema migration tools and scripting in PowerShell, Python, T-SQL or PL/SQL.
  • Working knowledge of Azure, AWS or GCP and their managed database services.
  • Strong working knowledge of ServiceNow (Incident, Change, CMDB) and ITIL practices.
  • Experience with monitoring platforms such as Datadog and Splunk, and with designing alerts.
  • A strong sense of ownership, staying calm during incidents, and careful attention to detail in change control and documentation.
  • Ability to explain technical risk in business terms and to work collaboratively, with an automation-first, continuous-improvement mindset.
  • Fluent English, written and spoken.

Conditions

Hybrid work based in Barcelona, Spain.

Equal opportunities are offered to all, regardless of race, colour, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, ability or gender identity.

Benefits

  • Final pay is set by experience, skills, location and other relevant factors.
  • The salary range for this position is €43.600,00 - €65.400,00.
  • Employees may be eligible for the company's employee benefit programmes.
  • Exposure to modern platforms, AIOps and intelligent operations in a regulated, high-standards setting.
