Data Support Engineer

Data Support Engineer based in Sydney, joining the global Data Science and Analytics function.

The company is a global quantitative and systematic investment manager covering all liquid asset classes worldwide. It is technology and data driven and applies a scientific method to investing, combining data, research, technology and trading expertise.

The team keeps the extensive datasets and production data processes used by quantitative researchers, traders and other business users accurate, reliable and available.

The Sydney role will strengthen support coverage across the APAC region and bridge the global handover between EMEA and Hong Kong.

You will be exposed to a broad range of financial and alternative datasets, including market and reference data, company information, economic data and text-based datasets used for systematic investing.

Responsibilities

• Monitor production data processes and act on automated alerts for failures, delays and data quality problems.
• Provide first-line technical and data support to quantitative researchers, traders and other data users.
• Investigate incidents across input, transformation and output stages of data pipelines.
• Check data for completeness, accuracy, timeliness and expected characteristics.
• Judge the likely business impact of each data issue and set incident priorities.
• Work with data engineers and other technical teams to diagnose problems and drive fixes.
• Keep affected users updated with clear, timely communication throughout each investigation.
• Map data flows, dependencies, ownership and downstream consumers.
• Track support requests and workflows in JIRA until each issue is resolved.
• Help improve monitoring, alerting, documentation and processes on an ongoing basis.
• Support onboarding of new team members and help users learn the company's data tools and processes.
• Help extend data coverage through live data collection and historical backfills.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Finance or a related discipline.
• Experience in data, production, application or another technical support role.
• Strong Python skills for manipulating, investigating and validating data.
• Experience with data systems, automated pipelines and APIs.
• Exposure to large datasets or high-volume production environments.
• Strong analytical skills and a methodical approach to problem solving.
• Excellent attention to detail and a firm commitment to data quality and accuracy.
• Clear communication with both technical and business stakeholders.
• Good judgement in prioritising incidents, escalating issues and explaining potential impact.
• Curiosity about how data processes and systems work.
• Ability to stay effective when processes, priorities and ownership change quickly.
• Experience in financial services, quantitative trading or market data is beneficial but not essential.
• Experience with JIRA or a similar workflow tool is advantageous.
