Description

The role is a permanent Data Scientist position at a London Market insurance business.

You will act as a critical thinker and problem solver, using your technical skills to work through complex business challenges, spot opportunities and support data-driven decisions.

You will work across many business functions, juggling several priorities and delivering both one-off analysis and predictive or prescriptive models.

Your analysis will help build the company's data culture. Explaining the business value of your work to stakeholders is central to the job.

The team has won an award for its work with Google on the market's first AI-enhanced lead underwriting solution.

You will sit within a wider technical team that spans several business functions and takes a multi-disciplinary approach to problems.

The role suits someone who wants to influence decisions with analytics and keeps learning. You will shape new approaches, present your ideas to stakeholders and see them through to delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Use established practices, new methods and published research to produce key inputs for business information, and help business leaders design new ways to grow their business.
  • Own work across the full data lifecycle: understand complex business problems, design solutions, and work with large and small datasets, including third-party and internal data of many kinds, applying modern machine learning or generative AI methods.
  • Collaborate with other data scientists and technical colleagues, including product and business teams.
  • Work with the wider data and analytics community across the company, using a range of analytical techniques to deliver value.

Requirements

  • A degree in a STEM or closely related subject, or equivalent experience. A further degree is a bonus.
  • Practical experience applying analytical techniques to business problems to produce useful insights. Experience in finance or insurance is useful but not required.
  • Experience with analysis, experimentation and model development aimed at business challenges. You are comfortable using generative AI tools, including AI-assisted coding, to speed up research, development and problem solving, and you understand the methods, code and outputs they produce.
  • You can critically review and validate AI-assisted work, take ownership of it, and ensure solutions are accurate, explainable and fit for purpose, working both alone and within a team.
  • Experience using statistics, machine learning, generative AI and data science methods to spot trends, generate insights and support business decisions.
  • Experience with analytical tools, programming languages and databases, such as Python and SQL.
  • Working knowledge of generative AI methods and tools, including large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, AI-assisted coding tools and agentic AI workflows.
  • Interest in a broad range of data science, machine learning and AI techniques, and a drive to learn about new technologies and good industry practice.
  • A solid grounding in statistical concepts and how to apply them in practice.
  • Experience working independently and within small, cross-functional teams to deliver analytics and data science projects.
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical ideas and findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to learn and apply engineering good practice, including version control, testing, code review and reproducible workflows.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is useful but not essential.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry is helpful but not required.
