Description

The Bureau of Public Health Clinics runs direct clinic services for people seeking care, tracks disease trends, trains service providers and community groups, conducts research, and builds clinical policies and programs. Services include tuberculosis identification and treatment, immunizations, and sexual health care, offered regardless of ability to pay or immigration status.

The company is hiring a City Research Scientist I, working as a data analyst. This role reports closely to the Director of Implementation and Evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Examine medical record data from the clinics through a public health lens to guide program planning and service delivery decisions.
  • Produce regular reports for case management and to monitor quality of care, clinic usage, and other performance measures.
  • Turn data requests into specific tasks, then build ad hoc reports and slide decks that present findings clearly through tables and charts.
  • Write standard annotations, technical notes, data dictionaries, and other documentation for analysis programs, datasets, and reports.
  • Help with program evaluation projects that look at how to improve clinical service delivery across public health clinic systems.
  • Make sure reporting, communication, and evaluation work is carried out with a racial equity and social justice focus.
  • Work with a mixed team of medical, operations, laboratory, administration, and epidemiology staff across the Bureau and other agency programs.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge and experience with R, SAS, or both is required.
  • Experience with relational databases is needed. SQL experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with data manipulation, analysis, and building data tables and reports.
  • Attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to juggle several different assignments at once while working both independently and as part of a team.
  • For Assignment Level I, a master's degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate physical, biological, or environmental science, or in public health.
  • For Assignment Level II and above, either a doctorate in an appropriate physical, biological, environmental, or social science plus one year of full-time responsible supervisory, administrative, or research experience in that field, or a master's in such a field plus three years of responsible full-time research experience in that field.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may be considered for the above levels, but all candidates must hold at least a master's degree in an appropriate field and have at least two years of the research experience described in the second option. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can replace the experience required in the first and second options.

Conditions

Appointments to this position carry a minimum probationary period of one year.

Some roles allow up to two days per week working from home, depending on the position.

The city is an equal opportunity employer and prohibits discrimination and harassment based on any legally protected status or characteristic.

Benefits

  • Eligibility for federal or state loan forgiveness and repayment assistance programs, which may reduce or fully cancel your balance. Details are available on the U.S. Department of Education student aid site.
  • A premium-free health insurance plan, which a 2024 assessment estimated saves employees over $10K a year.
  • Additional health, fitness, and financial benefits may apply depending on the union or benefit fund for the position.
  • A public sector defined benefit pension that pays steady monthly amounts in retirement.
  • A tax-deferred savings program.
  • A worksite wellness program with resources and activities for your health.
  • Greater job security than most private sector roles.
