Cobol/Smart400 Developer (1 Year contract)

You would join the team as a COBOL and Smart/400 developer on a one-year contract.

Responsibilities

• Turn business requirements into technical solutions and clear project documentation.
• Estimate implementation effort from business requirements.
• Write technical documentation based on business analysis.
• Help colleagues understand the technical side of the application.
• Build agreed solutions in the Smart/400 environment using COBOL and DB2, following internal standards and guidelines.
• Run unit and local tests on your work, and review colleagues' code.
• Update the technical documentation for any solution changes and add relevant scenarios to the test plan.
• Move application changes through the non-production environments and prepare them for production.
• Support implementation teams and colleagues from other departments during testing, and handle production issues the support team cannot resolve.

Requirements

• Strong design and programming skills in COBOL, AS/400, Control Language (CL) and related server-side AS/400 technologies.
• Hands-on experience with the SMART/400 development tools and the AS/400 platform.
• Experience with DB2 databases.
• Experience across the full software lifecycle: requirements, analysis and design, development, testing and deployment.
• Experience working in an Agile environment.
• Experience in insurance is an advantage.
• Good spoken and written English.
• A responsible, self-directed and solution-focused approach, with a real interest in growing your technical skills.
• You use curiosity and automation tools, including AI, to improve how the team works.
• You communicate with empathy, clarity and impact.
• You work well in a team and help others.

Conditions

Hybrid working hours with flexible start and finish times and a shorter Friday.

Up to 60 days per year of remote work from abroad.

Up to 27 days of leave depending on seniority, plus days off for unexpected personal events.

Office location in a quiet, central part of Bucharest, close to the metro.

You must meet the legal requirements to work in Romania.

• Monthly gross salary between 15,435 and 22,050 RON. This range is indicative. The final package is agreed at the end of recruitment, based on factors such as experience and skills. The final salary is confidential under current legislation, and the company may adjust the offer at any point during recruitment.
