Description

The Department of City Planning, New York City's planning agency, shapes the city's future by building lively, connected neighborhoods with housing, jobs, resilient infrastructure and a strong public realm.

The agency works with communities on inclusive plans, widens access to housing and economic opportunity, and plans for sustainability over the long term.

It helps the City Planning Commission review hundreds of land use applications each year and advises on citywide strategy and capital planning, along with data analysis, policy work, and open data and civic engagement tools.

The Technical Review Division keeps the official City Map and Zoning Map, which show streets, parks and zoning districts. It maintains the City Map records and handles every amendment.

The division is moving century-old paper records to modern GIS systems. That move is a long-standing goal and is now required under recent City Charter changes.

The division also reviews land use applications that bring millions of square feet of housing, commercial space and open space each year.

Title code: Civil Engineer, 20215.

Responsibilities

  • Keep the City Map current, including reviewing and processing proposed changes such as mapping or de-mapping streets and parks.

  • Review written and graphic materials from private surveyors and engineers on proposed City Map changes, making sure they support sound decisions and clearly document future work.
  • Advise private applicants, department staff, the City Planning Commission and other agencies on laying out streets, parks and related features and preparing Alteration Maps.
  • Make and carry out technical and policy decisions for the department, working with other staff and following direction from TRD leadership.
  • Handle requests about street status and monument data from staff, other agencies and the public.
  • Maintain archival hard-copy maps, digital static maps and GIS datasets that are updated continuously.
  • Lead the move from the current legacy record system to a single citywide digital GIS.
  • Coordinate with city agencies, outside partners and constituents.
  • Take on other related tasks as needed.
