Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection supplies about 1.1 billion gallons of drinking water a day, manages wastewater and storm water, and works to cut air, noise and hazardous materials pollution. It is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 staff. Its water supply covers 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed that reaches 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction manages capital projects worth $35B now, with another $13.6B planned over the next 10-year commitment plan. Its work keeps the department's water supply running well.

The Water System Capital Program handles planning, design, construction management and construction for upgrades and state of good repair across the Bureau of Water Supply's critical infrastructure. This covers new infrastructure and rebuilds of existing assets, across wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, shafts, reservoirs, tunnels, pumping stations, ultraviolet disinfection and filtration systems, and related facilities in New York City and its watershed.

The team is hiring an Assistant Civil Engineer to serve as Assistant Project Manager in the program's directorate, based at the Sutton Park office in Valhalla, NY. You will work under supervision and report to an Accountable Manager. The role supports water and wastewater projects in the watershed, which covers 125 miles north and west of the City, such as dams, aqueducts, treatment plants, bridges, roadways and other infrastructure.

  • Take an active part in field investigations and help develop alternative approaches and solutions that meet project objectives.
  • Work with the construction management team to inspect construction activity.
  • Complete all required environmental compliance and safety training.

Requirements

  • Either a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory civil engineering experience, or a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus a Master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college.
  • Preferred: working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products such as Word and Excel.
  • Preferred: understanding of project management principles, especially the procedures DEP uses.
  • Preferred: strong oral and written communication, ability to meet deadlines, and flexibility in how work is assigned.
  • Preferred: critical thinking and effective independent data analysis.
  • Preferred: a valid motor vehicle operation ability, needed for site visits, equipment testing, inspections and meetings with project stakeholders.

Conditions

Based at Sutton Park, 465 Columbus Avenue, Valhalla, NY 10595.

You may be required to work extended days from time to time.
