Description

This is a permanent role open only to current city employees who hold this title.

The technology office uses technology to expand access to affordable broadband, defend against cyber threats, improve public safety, and build digital services for New York City residents.

You will join the Infrastructure Management division as a Senior DevOps Engineer, providing site reliability engineering for all current and upcoming automation services and writing, updating, and maintaining code.

The work touches projects that affect millions of people, and you will use current technology alongside colleagues who share that commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Keep watch over CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes clusters, and application health dashboards.
  • Sort incoming alerts, apply documented fixes for low and medium severity issues, and pass complex incidents up to Senior DevOps.
  • Write, update, and maintain simple scripts, YAML configs, and Terraform and Ansible modules for deployments and infrastructure changes, working under senior guidance.
  • Smoke test and validate deployments in dev and staging, and confirm that monitoring, logging, and alerts work after code or config changes.
  • Take part in design sessions and code reviews with senior engineers, building skills in Linux, containers, Git, infrastructure as code, and observability tools while following team standards and change control.
  • Keep the wiki, runbooks, deployment guides, and troubleshooting docs current so knowledge is shared and incidents are resolved faster.
  • Take on special projects and initiatives as assigned.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in computer science from an accredited college or university, plus 3 years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory IT experience in applications development, systems development, data communications and networking, database administration, data processing, or user services. At least 18 months of that must be in an administrative, managerial, or executive role in those areas, or in supervising staff who do that work.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, plus 4 years of the same kind of experience described in the first option.
  • A 4-year high school diploma or its equivalent, plus 6 years of the same kind of experience described in the first option.
  • A combination of education and experience equal to the options above. Every candidate must have at least a 4-year high school diploma or its equivalent and 3 years of that experience, including the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory experience.
  • Without a bachelor's degree, undergraduate credits can replace up to 2 years of IT experience at 30 semester credits per 6 months. Graduate computer science credits can replace up to 1 year of IT experience at 30 graduate semester credits per year. Neither undergraduate nor graduate credits can replace the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory experience.
