Description

The technology office of New York City uses technology to expand access to affordable broadband, defend against cyber threats, improve public safety, and build digital services for residents.

The Senior DevOps Engineer reports to the Infrastructure Management division and provides site reliability engineering for all current and new automation services, including writing, updating, and maintaining code.

The team is a city office, and the role is open to city employees only and is permanent in this title.

Responsibilities

  • Watch CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes clusters, and application health dashboards, triage alerts, fix low and medium issues using documented steps, and escalate complex incidents to senior DevOps engineers.
  • Under senior guidance, write, update, and maintain basic scripts, YAML configs, and Terraform or Ansible modules that support deployments and infrastructure changes.
  • Smoke test deployments in dev and staging, and confirm that monitoring, logging, and alerts work after code or config changes.
  • Join design sessions and code reviews with senior engineers, build skills in Linux, containers, Git, infrastructure as code, and observability tools, and follow team standards and change control.
  • Keep the wiki, runbooks, deployment guides, and troubleshooting documents current to reduce knowledge silos and speed up incident response.
  • Take on special projects and initiatives as assigned.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in computer science from an accredited college or university, plus 3 years of increasingly senior, full-time IT experience in application or systems development, data communications and networking, database administration, data processing, or user services. At least 18 months of this must be in an administrative, managerial, or executive role in those areas, or in supervising staff who perform that work.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, plus 4 years of the same kind of increasingly senior, full-time IT experience described above.
  • A four-year high school diploma or equivalent, plus 6 years of the same kind of increasingly senior, full-time IT experience described above.
  • A reasonable mix of education and experience equal to the options above. All candidates must hold at least a four-year high school diploma or equivalent and have at least 3 years of the IT experience described above, including the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory experience.
  • Without a bachelor's degree, undergraduate credits can replace up to 2 years of required IT experience at 30 semester credits per 6 months. Graduate credits in computer science can replace up to 1 year at 30 graduate semester credits per year. Neither undergraduate nor graduate credits can replace the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory experience.
