Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) delivers 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, handles wastewater and storm water, and works to reduce air, noise and hazardous materials pollution.

DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country and employs nearly 6,000 people. Its water supply spans a 2,000 square mile watershed reaching 125 miles north and west of the City, with 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes.

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) manages capital projects valued at $35B, with another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan.

In-House Design (IHD) provides design and engineering services in line with BEDC's core values of safety, schedule, quality and customer service. IHD takes projects from initial planning through preliminary design, design, procurement and construction, then hands them over to operations.

The Civil Section of IHD prepares civil engineering documents for water supply, wastewater and other facilities, including large, complex projects. Its work covers site grading and paving, yard piping, drainage and stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and maintenance of traffic, and it provides engineering support during construction. The team works closely with land surveying, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, architectural and electrical staff throughout design.
