Description

The company makes scientific instruments and software. This newly forming Materials Science R&D AI team will bring shared, scalable AI capabilities into those products for users worldwide.

This is a hands-on engineering role that turns the team's AI strategy into working solutions. You will build intelligent experiences for people and for digital agents, helping the company's instruments and software stand out through real innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Work with product teams and the Applications Development group to learn scientific workflows, customer problems and the AI use cases that matter most.
  • Take use cases from prototype through architecture and reusable components to production-ready solutions.
  • Create and assess generative AI and agentic workflows that link users and digital agents to instruments, software and data.
  • Partner with product teams in electron microscopy and analytical technologies, joining their project teams for hands-on integration when needed.
  • Plug in existing shared and emerging AI platforms, spot gaps, and send platform teams practical feedback.
  • Test AI models, frameworks and approaches quickly for fit, performance, reliability and robustness.
  • Work with software and systems engineers to fit AI into dependable product designs, documenting interfaces, decisions and lessons learned.
  • Pass technical know-how across R&D and feed implementation insights into the evolving AI roadmap.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building solutions with large language models and generative AI, including evaluating them and integrating them into applications.
  • Strong Python skills and practical PyTorch experience for building or adapting AI and ML solutions.
  • Understanding of reinforcement learning and judgment about where it adds value to real technical problems.
  • Experience developing software in Agile teams, prototyping ideas quickly and taking them to reliable implementations.
  • Ability to evaluate AI models, frameworks and architectures, weigh trade-offs and choose approaches that suit scientific product needs.
  • Good communication and a collaborative style when working with application scientists, software engineers and global product teams.
  • Interest in scientific workflows and skill at turning customer needs into practical, testable, reusable AI capabilities.

Conditions

Standard Monday to Friday schedule.

Office-based role.

Benefits

  • Work on AI that supports real scientific discovery rather than isolated demonstrations.
  • Work with cutting-edge agentic AI on problems spanning software, scientific workflows and instruments.
  • Collaborate internationally with AI specialists, application scientists and product engineering teams.
  • Shape reusable AI approaches across several product lines and see your ideas reach products.
  • Build expertise in a global R&D organization focused on innovation and customer impact.
  • Flexible working hours to help balance work with personal life.
  • 25 days of holiday leave and 5 sick days each year.
  • Annual bonus and a pension insurance allowance, plus the option of life or health insurance at favourable rates.
  • Mobile plan for you and your family at good rates.
