Description

The role is about designing, building and improving software using a range of engineering methods, so that the business, the platform and the technology have what they need for customers and colleagues.

The company operates in 39 countries, has roughly 90,000 staff and draws on over 325 years of banking history to move, lend, invest and protect money.

Technology developers keep the company's systems working and improving. You will pick up software engineering methods, work alongside experienced teams and help build secure, dependable digital services.

The company has spent over a decade refining the support it gives apprentices. The programme suits school leavers and career changers, and anyone can apply regardless of background or age.

If you already hold a degree, the company also runs graduate opportunities you may want to consider instead.

Responsibilities

  • Build and deliver high-quality software in industry-standard languages, frameworks and tools, writing code that scales, is easy to maintain and performs well.
  • Work with product managers, designers and other engineers to pin down requirements, choose approaches and make sure your work fits business goals and integrates with other systems.
  • Review colleagues' code, share what you learn and help build a culture where code quality matters.
  • Write code that protects sensitive data and guards against security weaknesses.
  • Write unit tests that check code design, readability and reliability.
  • Meet the needs of stakeholders and customers through operational excellence and good service.
  • Complete assigned tasks on time and to a high standard.
  • Follow documented processes and procedures, working with team members and affecting their work.
  • Raise policy breaches with the right people when needed.
  • Own customer service and operational tasks.
  • Take ownership of risk in your work and help strengthen controls, following relevant rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
  • Understand your own role, how your team contributes to wider goals and what other teams do.
  • Work within defined procedures, which may involve varied routines.
  • Show that you understand the procedures.
  • Choose the right option from a set of defined alternatives.
  • Base your judgements on factual analysis.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders and customers to understand their needs, keep processes running smoothly and handle sensitive issues where needed.

Requirements

  • Three A-levels at BBB or equivalent.
  • GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade A-C / 9-4 or equivalent.
  • Commitment and enthusiasm: you will arrive ready to work hard, push yourself and think differently about what you can do.
  • You must meet the government apprentice funding requirements that apply to you, as set out on the official government sites for England and Scotland.
  • You must meet the government's 3 year residence requirement, subject to certain exceptions.
  • You must be legally entitled to work for the whole programme when you enrol, with no gaps and no reliance on future visa applications.
  • You must not have completed previous study, education, training, qualifications or an apprenticeship, gained learning or competence from prior work, or received prior funding that makes you ineligible for government apprentice funding.

Conditions

The programme runs from August 2027 to August 2031.

This is a permanent, full-time job.

The annual salary is £25,200 plus benefits.

The base is the Northampton campus, which is environmentally friendly and has cafés, collaboration spaces, green spaces, wellbeing areas, parking, public transport links and a shuttle bus service.

Selection has five steps: application review, online assessments, an eligibility survey, an in-person assessment day with a group activity and interview from October 2026, then the outcome and feedback.

The closing date is 27 November 2026, but the vacancy may close early because of application volumes, so apply as early as possible.

You are expected to show the company's values of Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship, and its mindset to Empower, Challenge and Drive.

Benefits

  • Earn while you work towards a Digital & Technology Solutions Professional Degree Apprenticeship, combining theory with practical work.
  • Gain a professional qualification without student loan debt.
  • Build years of work experience while you learn.
  • Receive a Programme Support Manager matched to your needs and background, who works with your People Leader to support you.
  • Get matched with an expert in your specialist subject who will share their knowledge.
  • Explore different career paths during the apprenticeship.
  • If a more relevant apprenticeship becomes available before you start, the company may switch you to it.
