Description

The role is about designing, building and improving software with a range of engineering methods. The software supports the company's business, platform and technology needs, along with its customers and colleagues.

This is an apprenticeship at the company's Knutsford site, where you train for a Digital & Technology Solutions Professional Degree Apprenticeship while working full time.

The company has operated in banking for over 325 years, in 39 countries, with around 90,000 people helping customers and clients move, lend, invest and protect money.

Technology Developers build and improve the systems the company relies on, learning software engineering while working with experienced teams on reliable, secure digital services.

The programme suits school leavers and career changers, and it is open to anyone regardless of background or age. Graduates with an existing degree should look at the company's graduate roles instead.

Responsibilities

  • Build and deliver high-quality software using programming languages, frameworks and tools that the industry uses.
  • Write code that can scale, is easy to maintain and performs well.
  • Work with product managers, designers and other engineers to set software requirements, plan solutions and make sure the work fits together and meets business goals.
  • Take part in code reviews, share knowledge with peers and help build a focus on code quality.
  • Follow secure coding practices to reduce vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data and keep software secure.
  • Write and apply unit tests so code is well designed, readable and reliable.
  • Complete set tasks on time and to a high standard, following defined procedures and routines.
  • Work with stakeholders and customers to understand their needs, keep processes running smoothly and handle sensitive issues when they arise.
  • Report any breaches of policy that you come across, escalating them as needed.
  • Manage risk and strengthen controls for the work you own or contribute to, following relevant rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
  • Choose the right option from defined alternatives and make judgements based on factual analysis.
  • Understand your own role, how your team contributes to wider goals, and what other teams in the function do.
  • Show the company's values of respect, integrity, service, excellence and stewardship, and its mindset of empowering, challenging and driving.

Requirements

  • Have 104 points at A2 (grades BCC) or an equivalent qualification, such as BTEC DMM.
  • Have GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade A-C or 9-4, or an equivalent.
  • Show commitment and enthusiasm, and be ready to work hard, push yourself and think differently about what you can achieve.
  • Meet the Government's apprentice funding requirements that apply to you. These include a 3 year residence requirement, subject to certain exceptions. You must have the legal right to work for the whole programme when you enrol, with no gaps and no reliance on future visa applications, for the apprenticeship period of August 2027 to August 2031.
  • Have not completed any previous study, education, training, qualification or apprenticeship, and have not gained learning or competence from prior work experience. You must also not have received prior funding or financial support that makes you ineligible for Government apprentice funding.

Conditions

This is a permanent, full-time job with a competitive salary from day one, while you gain a professional qualification.

Annual salary is £25,200 plus benefits.

The campus is in Knutsford, set in 64 acres of gardens around historic Radbroke Hall, with clubs, activities, shuttle buses and onsite parking.

The company may switch to a different apprenticeship before you start if a newer one becomes more relevant to your role.

The selection process has five steps: a review of your application, online assessments, an eligibility survey, an in-person assessment day from October 2026 with a group activity and interview, and then the outcome with feedback.

Applications close on 27 November 2026, but the vacancy may close earlier because of high application volumes, so apply as early as you can.

The company is an equal opportunities employer.

Benefits

  • You earn a salary while you study, with no student loan.
  • From day one you get a Programme Support Manager matched to your needs and background, who works with your People Leader to support you.
  • You are matched with an expert in your specialist subject who can share their knowledge.
  • The apprenticeship lets you explore different career paths and build years of work experience.
