2027 Summer Intern – Machine Learning Intern, Autonomous Vehicles: Software Validation (PhD)

Description

The autonomous vehicle group works on self-driving vehicles using simulation tools and iterative development. The software validation team decides when software can launch and when it can be released continuously, using simulation-based verification methods and targeted vehicle tests.

As a machine learning validation engineer on this team, you will help run validation work on autonomous vehicle behavior. You will help write guidance on behavioral performance, design complex verification strategies, and set performance requirements through analysis. You will work with other engineers to define best practices and drive new approaches to testing, verifying the safety and performance of autonomous systems, including AI and other ADAS features. The solutions you help build will serve AI developers, systems engineers, and safety stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Improve the frameworks and tools used to validate AI and ML in autonomous vehicle software.
• Build automated testing pipelines for simulation and real-world validation that use machine learning.
• Apply machine learning to improve simulated performance metrics.
• Create tools that use machine learning and statistical methods to find edge cases and failure modes in autonomous vehicles.
• Study large volumes of driving data to find validation gaps and widen test coverage.

Requirements

• Be currently enrolled in a PhD program in computer science, machine learning, engineering, or a related technical field, and be in the process of completing it.
• Expected to graduate between December 2027 and August 2028.
• Have experience coding in Python, SQL, C/C++, or other languages.
• Preferred: research or work experience in a relevant area such as machine learning, simulation, AI validation, deep learning, reinforcement learning, data mining, or computer vision.
• Preferred: intent to return to your degree program after the internship.
• Preferred: demonstrated software engineering experience through an internship, work, coding competitions, or PhD papers.
• Preferred: experience in systems software or algorithms.
• Preferred: a record of significant results, such as grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored papers at leading workshops or conferences.
• Preferred: demonstrated creativity and fast problem-solving.
• Preferred: experience with Hadoop, HBase, Pig, or MapReduce, Sawzall, Bigtable.

Conditions

The pay figure is a good faith estimate based on what a successful applicant might earn under applicable state laws. It may not reflect roles outside New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

The base salary range is $11,600 to $13,600 per month. The final offer within that range depends on factors relevant to the position.
