Technical Lead Windows & SQL Server

Description

The company is hiring a tech lead for the Windows & SQL Server product team within Managed IaaS.

You are a seasoned technical leader who works well in complex infrastructure and automation, guides engineers, and combines big-picture thinking with hands-on skill.

You will drive the team technically, set its direction, make architecture choices clear, and turn strategy into workable solutions. You connect engineers, product owners, domain architects and other tech leads, and stay close enough to the details to keep your credibility.

You will help shape Windows Server and SQL Server platforms that are robust, secure, scalable and ready for change.

You will work in the MIaaS Windows & SQL team, a group of ten Windows and SQL specialists who share knowledge and enjoy hard technical problems.

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction and roadmap for Windows and SQL Server services in Managed IaaS, together with the team
• Turn architecture decisions into concrete plans that engineers can carry out
• Give the domain architect the technical input needed for sound architecture choices
• Own technical decisions in your area and keep uncertainty from delaying projects
• Write or contribute to ADRs, Solution Intents and other technical documentation
• Protect technical quality through reviews, standards and best practices
• Coach engineers through complex problems while leaving ownership with the team
• Push automation, standardisation and continuous improvement
• Improve stability, security, performance and lifecycle management of Windows and SQL Server environments
• Represent the team in technical forums and relay outcomes back to the engineers
• Work across Windows Server administration, lifecycle management, hardening and troubleshooting
• Work across SQL Server administration, performance tuning, security, backup and recovery, and high availability
• Work with Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP and related Microsoft infrastructure
• Automate with PowerShell, Ansible, YAML and, where relevant, Python
• Apply Desired State Configuration, standardisation and security baselines
• Apply CI/CD, Azure DevOps and Infrastructure-as-Code principles
• Handle monitoring, performance optimisation and incident and problem management
• Collaborate with application, infrastructure and security teams, architects and operations

Requirements

• Extensive experience as a senior engineer, lead engineer, SQL Server administrator, Windows engineer or a comparable role
• Deep knowledge of Windows Server environments and solid knowledge of SQL Server
• Understanding of enterprise infrastructure and comfort in complex IT landscapes
• Ability to challenge, coach and direct engineers, bringing clarity and structure to decisions
• Clear communication of technical decisions to engineers, architects and stakeholders
• Decisive, knowing when to dig deeper, when to align with others and when to give direction
• Encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing and collective ownership
• Strong focus on security, compliance, stability and operational excellence
• Bachelor's or Master's level working and thinking ability, preferably in IT, computer science or a comparable technical field
• Several years managing Windows Server and/or SQL Server environments in an enterprise setting
• Experience with coaching, mentoring or technical leadership in an engineering team
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Knowledge of ITIL processes and experience in controlled enterprise environments
• Strong PowerShell knowledge
• Advantage: experience with Ansible, Python, YAML or other automation tooling
• Advantage: experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD or Infrastructure-as-Code
• Communicate effectively in English
• Plus: Dutch, for collaboration within the Dutch business context
