Description

The company builds reliable, interpretable and steerable AI systems, aiming for them to be safe and beneficial for users and society. It is a growing team of researchers, engineers, policy experts and business leaders, headquartered in San Francisco as a public benefit corporation.

You would be the senior data science leader inside the Core Apps product team, part of the growing Data Science and Analytics group. Your analysis would guide strategy as the company deploys frontier AI at scale, and you would help set the norms and practices of the team as it grows.

You would advise the Core Apps product leads and help set direction for Claude Code and other new bets, including where to invest and how to grow the apps business. You would also manage a small group of Product Data Scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Advise Core Apps product leads on strategy, roadmap priorities and the largest bets.
  • Decide where the Product Data Science team should focus and what it should stop doing.
  • Lead and develop a small team of Product Data Scientists, coaching them to move from answering questions to influencing decisions.
  • Frame the hardest and least clear business questions, size the opportunities and recommend a course, even when that challenges the current direction.
  • Set the core metrics and measurement frameworks so teams and leaders agree on what success means.
  • Set the standard for experimentation and causal inference across Core Apps, and personally lead the highest-stakes analyses.
  • Turn complex analysis into clear stories and recommendations for senior leaders and cross-functional partners.
  • Build the foundational data practices and analytics infrastructure Core Apps needs for fast iteration as the products grow.

Requirements

  • Extensive data science experience, including leading analytics for a product area at significant scale.
  • 3+ years managing data science teams, including setting direction and developing senior data scientists.
  • A record as a trusted partner to senior product and business leaders, with clear examples of changing a roadmap or a high-stakes decision.
  • Strong product sense and business judgment, including framing the right question and taking a position with incomplete information.
  • Deep expertise in experimental design, causal inference and statistical modeling at high scale, plus enough Python and SQL to stay hands-on and guide others' technical work.
  • Clear written and spoken communication, including with executive audiences.
  • A bias for action and comfort in ambiguous, fast-moving settings where you create clarity and drive progress.
  • Commitment to the company's mission of building helpful, honest and harmless AI.
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent mix of education, training and/or experience, in a field relevant to the role as shown through coursework, training or professional experience. Required years of experience match the internal job level.
  • Strong candidates may also have: experience with AI/ML products, large language models or developer tooling.

Conditions

Annual salary: $460,000 USD.

Hybrid policy: staff are expected in an office at least 25% of the time, and some roles require more.

Visa sponsorship is available, though not for every role or candidate. If you receive an offer, the company will make every reasonable effort to secure a visa, supported by an immigration lawyer.

You are encouraged to apply even if you do not meet every qualification, as the team values a range of perspectives.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • An office space for collaborating with colleagues.
