Team Lead Platform Engineering

The company is a financial platform for small businesses, offering a business credit card, a spend management platform for SMEs, a savings product that reached £1 billion in funds within its first year, and a growing set of tools and financial products for running a small business.

The company has over 1,000 employees, around £20bn in annual card spend, more than 200,000 customers, and is profitable.

The Cloud Platform team sits within Platform Engineering and Platform Operations. As the team grows, it is reworking its infrastructure to serve engineers across the globe.

Responsibilities

• Coach engineers through regular mentoring and clear, constructive feedback so they keep developing.
• Remove blockers, hold people to the commitments they make, and keep engagement high so the team delivers consistently and uses resources well.
• Lead the team's use of AI, from daily operations through to large projects.
• Keep communication open and clear whether the team works remotely, in a hybrid pattern, or in the office.
• Keep writing hands-on Cloud and Platform engineering work, setting the technical standard.
• Define and enforce platform engineering practices that keep systems consistent, scalable and well run across the company.
• Work with Product Managers, Engineering Managers and QA to agree direction and deliver ideas as finished results.
• Shape product decisions with a platform view that weighs speed, quality and scalability.
• Spot risks early and reduce them before they stall the team.
• Build DevSecOps into the work from the start, covering security, monitoring, compliance and automation.

Requirements

• Experience leading Cloud or Platform engineering teams, with confidence and decisiveness, while supporting people.
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams that include engineers, QA and other stakeholders.
• Strong communication skills that make technical and non-technical people understand each other.
• Solid knowledge of current cloud and platform engineering practices and scalable system design.
• A record of building a culture focused on reliability, performance and continuous improvement.
• Expertise in Azure, cloud technologies and the common tools used in Cloud and Platform Engineering.
• Proven experience scaling a platform for a fast-moving containerised environment.

Conditions

Interview process: a 30-minute introductory call with a Talent Partner, a 60-minute technical interview with the Engineering Manager and People Partner, a 60-minute live technical challenge with the Platform team, and a 60-minute case study with Product, the Engineering Manager and the Head of Platform Operations.
