Description

The team builds Train Handling products, Trip Optimizer and Locotrol, which together improve train performance, fuel use, operational safety and the ability to run longer and heavier trains.

Trip Optimizer produces and runs fuel-efficient operating plans that meet schedule and train-handling needs. Locotrol coordinates distributed locomotives along the whole train.

You will work with cross-functional engineering teams, product management, program leadership and railroad customers to deliver train automation solutions that improve operations and business value.

The role leads parts of the design, development, integration and deployment of the Train Handling portfolio. You will define and manage system requirements, run trade studies, coordinate verification and validation, and help shape product strategy and features.

The company wants an AI-native engineer who uses AI across the engineering lifecycle to speed up innovation, raise product quality and improve customer results. You will look for chances to use analytics, automation and AI-enabled capabilities on complex operational problems and system performance.

The company is a global supplier of equipment, systems, digital solutions and services for freight and transit rail, with more than 150 years of experience and about 30,000 employees worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, integration, testing and enhancement of Train Handling solutions using sound systems engineering and established product development processes.

  • Investigate complex technical issues, find root causes by analyzing system performance, and put corrective actions in place.
  • Plan and carry out field testing, validation and operational evaluations to confirm that solutions meet customer expectations and performance requirements.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation, engineering deliverables, project status updates and system specifications.
  • Work directly with railroad customers, subject matter experts and internal stakeholders to understand operational problems and turn them into technical solutions.
  • Apply industry standards, engineering best practices and new technologies to keep improving product capability, reliability and performance.
  • Use AI-enabled tools to speed up analysis, improve engineering productivity, support decisions and drive product innovation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in design, requirements development and implementation involving engineering systems, hardware or software engineering, and/or data information systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Preferred: demonstrated experience applying systems engineering principles across the product development lifecycle.
  • Preferred: experience with software, controls, automation, transportation, embedded or safety-critical systems.
  • Preferred: familiarity with systems architecture, requirements management, verification and validation, and systems integration.
  • Preferred: strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational and communication skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions.
  • Preferred: experience working across several engineering disciplines and balancing competing priorities in a fast-changing setting.
  • Preferred: demonstrated use of AI-enabled tools, advanced analytics or data-driven methods to improve engineering outcomes.
