Description

The company is hiring an application development lead for a key initiative within its data strategy.

You will need deep, hands-on experience with the Starburst data federation and virtualization platform.

This is a Technology role in the Applications Development job family.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the main technical contact between analytics consumers and the owners of upstream data sources.
  • Lead end-to-end technical onboarding of new data catalogs into Starburst using its native Hive/Iceberg, Oracle and S3 connectors.
  • Set operational rules, including resource and query limits, so federated queries do not slow critical transactional databases.
  • Work with upstream data stewards to keep business glossaries, data dictionaries, lineage mappings and classification tags accurate.
  • Build and govern central access control using role-based access control (RBAC) and row-level filters in Apache Ranger.
  • Set onboarding standards for Hive/Iceberg tables, covering partitioning, sort keys, Parquet or ORC file formats and statistics collection.
  • Check and tune predicate, projection and join pushdown on newly onboarded sources to keep query federation fast.
  • Forecast capacity, review query cost and apply optimizations such as materialization to get the most throughput from the cluster.
  • Work with enterprise technology enablement teams, data architects and domain engineers to design, build and publish standard, reusable data products on Starburst using open formats.
  • Connect data products to enterprise catalogs, governance marketplaces and BI tools so they are easy to find, lineage is automated and access stays governed.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of hands-on work with the Starburst platform.
  • Solid knowledge of Trino architecture, Apache Ranger policies, Starburst data products and the Iceberg table format.
  • At least 6 years of hands-on application development.
  • Good grasp of software architecture and distributed system design, including microservices and event-driven architecture.
  • Extensive experience with relational (Oracle) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases, including advanced SQL.
  • Experience with big data tools such as Apache Spark, Hadoop and Kafka, plus data warehousing.
  • Proven ability to design, build and secure RESTful APIs and integration patterns.
  • Hands-on work with CI/CD systems such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions or Bitbucket Pipelines for automated deployment.
  • Highly experienced with Unix-based systems and shell scripting.
  • Strong background in AWS, Azure or GCP, including Docker and contributing to Kubernetes orchestration.
  • Advanced troubleshooting, debugging and performance tuning for distributed systems.
  • Skilled with automated testing frameworks such as Pytest and unittest, and with TDD.
  • Solid understanding of secure coding and application security, including the OWASP Top 10.
  • Expert in Git (Bitbucket, GitHub), including advanced branching and pull request workflows.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a global data engineering and platform operations team across multiple time zones.
  • Hands-on experience with AI tools such as Copilot, Devin and Claude, Gemini or GPT for development workflows.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • A master's degree is preferred.
  • Desirable: deep understanding of and practical experience with Agile or Scrum methodologies.
  • Desirable: exceptional ability to manage priorities and tasks.
  • Desirable: strong analytical, logical, systems thinking and critical analysis skills.
  • Desirable: excellent written and verbal communication for diverse audiences.
  • Desirable: ability to work independently, take ownership and collaborate effectively in global teams.
  • Desirable: polyglot programming exposure, such as Java.
  • Desirable: relevant cloud or industry certifications.
  • Desirable: experience in banking domains such as finance, forecasting and treasury.
