Description

The company builds anesthesia and ventilation delivery technology, including life-critical embedded software that runs in anesthesia delivery systems and related vaporizer technologies used by clinicians daily.

The role is for an experienced embedded software engineer with solid, equal depth in RTOS and Embedded Linux. The systems span several processors and include communication interfaces, hardware control, and FPGA-based functions.

This is a hands-on technical leadership position. You will lead complex subsystems, make system-level design calls, mentor engineers, and keep critical product and architecture knowledge current. You must grasp how software and FPGA-based control work together and be able to steer that architecture alongside FPGA and hardware engineers. Writing FPGA logic or HDL is not part of the job.

Strong candidates want to understand the whole medical device, not just their own software. Over time, you should become a go-to expert in distributed embedded systems and in anesthesia and ventilation delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, implementation, integration, and verification of distributed embedded software across RTOS and Embedded Linux.
  • Define and review interfaces between processors, software subsystems, communications, hardware, and FPGA-based control.
  • Agree with FPGA and hardware engineers on responsibilities, data flows, timing, diagnostics, fault behavior, and integration plans.
  • Lead work on real-time behavior, concurrency, platform bring-up, BSPs, drivers, boot processes, inter-processor communication, and low-level debugging.
  • Make decisions on performance, determinism, reliability, maintainability, cybersecurity, safety, and fault handling.
  • Lead design and code reviews, mentor engineers, and help resolve complex product and field issues.
  • Contribute to platform roadmaps, reusable software, automated testing, CI/CD, and development tooling.
  • Collaborate with systems, controls, hardware, quality, clinical, cybersecurity, and global software teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 8+ years of software development experience, including substantial embedded systems work.
  • Solid, comparable professional experience with RTOS-based embedded software and Embedded Linux.
  • Extensive C++ experience in concurrent, real-time, resource-constrained, or reliability-critical systems.
  • Experience designing and integrating distributed embedded systems with multiple processors, communications, hardware interfaces, and FPGA-based control.
  • Ability to drive architecture and integration for an FPGA-enabled system. FPGA or HDL development experience is not required.
  • Strong skills in system integration, platform bring-up, debugging, technical leadership, and communication.
  • Preferred: experience with Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC or a similar heterogeneous SoC combining application processors, real-time processors, and programmable logic.
  • Preferred: knowledge of control systems, such as real-time control, closed-loop systems, modeling, simulation, or control-algorithm integration.
  • Preferred: experience with FreeRTOS or another RTOS, Linux BSPs, drivers, boot processes, kernel interfaces, and ARM-based systems.
  • Preferred: experience in medical devices or another regulated, safety-critical industry.
  • Preferred: experience mentoring engineers and building reusable embedded platforms.
  • Preferred: interest in becoming a system-level and domain expert in anesthesia and ventilation delivery.
  • Candidates must act with humility, build trust, lead with transparency, deliver with focus, and take ownership, always with integrity.
