Description

The company is Thomasnet, part of the company, the industrial platform where millions of buyers find and source from North American manufacturers and suppliers.

This Staff Software Engineer role sits in the Thomas engineering team. The company is moving from a traditional supplier directory to AI-assisted sourcing.

You will be a senior individual contributor, guiding software implementation across several engineering teams and influencing decisions across the technology organization. You will stay hands-on in the code.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for the shared systems and AI infrastructure that the move to AI-assisted sourcing relies on.
  • Write and review architectural plans for new projects, then take part in building them with the teams.
  • Decide when to change course and when to keep what already works, including how AI is adopted across the platform.
  • Choose a sensible mix of proven and cutting-edge technologies and methods.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization and help them grow their skills.
  • Review code and coach others across the organization to do thorough code reviews.
  • Deliver reliable, high-quality software that goes beyond customer expectations and fits business timelines.
  • Partner with product managers, designers and leadership to keep communication open, collaboration strong and standards high.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, including owning outcomes, setting technical direction across teams, mentoring engineers at all levels and influencing product and business decisions.
  • Full-stack experience at production scale. Our stack is TypeScript and Node.js backend services with GraphQL APIs, React and Next.js frontend, PostgreSQL and analytical data stores, and search such as OpenSearch. Experience in another modern stack is just as valuable, and you do not need prior experience with these exact tools.
  • Hands-on work on AI product engineering, such as LLM applications, retrieval-augmented generation, vector search or embedding models. You build with these tools and evaluate their output rigorously, whichever frameworks you use.
  • Depth in areas the platform is growing into, such as multimodal (image and text) embeddings and search, agent orchestration frameworks (for example LangGraph or LangChain), model fine-tuning and adaptation, and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • You learn quickly, take initiative, work fluently in an AI-native development environment and share what you learn.
  • Experience with marketplaces or multi-sided platforms is highly desirable, including an understanding of scaling shared platforms.
  • Clear communication and collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, from junior engineers to executives.

Conditions

The role is hybrid, indicated by LI-Hybrid.

The estimated base salary for new hires is $176,250 to $182,500 per year, plus an annual bonus. The actual figure depends on job-related skills, relevant experience and location.

  • Generous paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, floating and fixed holidays.
  • Maternity and bonding leave.
  • Employee Assistance Program and other wellbeing resources.
  • A stipend for catered lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
