Staff Software Engineer - Data Platform - Kubernetes - Distributed Systems - Federal

Description

The company is hiring a Staff Software Engineer at IC4 level for its Data Platform Engineering group.

You will be a hands-on builder who owns well-defined components and projects and carries them from start to finish.

This role includes support for the company's US Regulated Markets.

Responsibilities

• Build, run, and evolve components and services on the cloud-native platform, from design through to production.
• Lead well-defined projects in your team, turning requirements and early ideas into sound technical designs and then delivering them.
• Work with senior, staff, and principal engineers to keep your work aligned with platform architecture and standards.
• Make what you build reliable, scalable, and easy to operate by writing tests and instrumentation, improving runbooks, and taking part in on-call rotations.
• Spend most of your time coding operators, controllers, automation, and platform services that other teams rely on.
• Onboard and mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pair programming.

Requirements

• Experience using AI in engineering work, or thinking critically about it, such as with AI-assisted coding and operations tools, workflow automation, or how AI changes the way software and infrastructure get built.
• 8+ years of software development experience with a Bachelor's degree, 5+ years with a Master's degree, 3+ years with a PhD, or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience building, deploying, and running workloads on Kubernetes.
• Working experience with at least one major hyperscaler (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including its core compute, networking, and IAM primitives.
• A record of delivering complex features or services as a key contributor.
• Solid working knowledge of containers, CI/CD, GitOps-based delivery, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Strong programming skills in Go, or in another systems language with a willingness to work mainly in Go.
• Helps if you have: experience building Kubernetes controllers or working with the operator pattern.
• Helps if you have: familiarity with container networking (CNI) or service mesh.
• Helps if you have: experience with workload identity, mTLS, or secrets management.
• Helps if you have: experience with observability, including metrics, tracing, and dashboards.
• Helps if you have: experience with managed Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, or GKE) and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.

Conditions

This is a flexible hybrid position, which requires 2 days per week in a company office. Offices are located in San Francisco, CA; Pleasanton, CA; Santa Clara, CA; San Diego, CA; and Kirkland, WA.

For this location, base pay is $149,800 to $262,200, plus equity when applicable, variable or incentive pay, and benefits.

Base pay is a guideline only. Total compensation depends on qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location, and pay is set by the geographic location of the role and may change.

Work personas (flexible, remote, or required in office) are assigned based on the nature of the work and the employee's work location. Eligibility may be checked by measuring the distance from your main residence to the nearest company office using a third-party service.
