Description

The company is a financial ecosystem in Africa offering payments, banking, credit and business management tools to around 10 million businesses and individuals, operating since 2019.

It is the largest merchant acquirer in Nigeria and runs most of the country's POS transactions through its subsidiaries, which process $22 billion a month. The company is profitable.

This Staff Product Designer role takes on the largest and most open-ended design problems and sets long-term design direction for a product area. You will help decide what gets built and how it works, including complex journeys, shared patterns and the questions that shape the next steps.

Money products demand trust, and many users have low-end devices or weak internet connections. The standards you set here will guide how the company handles that.

You will sit on one of the product teams, either building customer products for POS, mobile and web or internal tools that teams use to serve customers. Your home team is a starting point. Because your journeys and patterns will span several teams, you will work with designers, product managers and engineers across them so the product feels like one experience.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role. You lead through your work and influence, partnering with design, product and engineering leaders, supported by researchers and content designers.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design of the most complex work from discovery through launch and after.
  • Set long-term design direction for your product area and look ahead so teams can plan and build toward it.
  • Work with product and engineering leaders to decide what to build and why, starting from the problem rather than a solution.
  • Design systems of templates and patterns that can be configured and reused, and help the design system team shape its direction.
  • Set the standard for accessibility and inclusion in your area and help other teams meet it, so products work for people with any ability, device, connection or level of digital literacy.
  • Find where features from different teams overlap or conflict, and lead those teams to one design that works across the product.
  • Test the biggest product bets with customers and data before committing to build them.
  • Stay involved through build so the shipped product matches the design, then measure impact on customers and the business and keep improving it. Present work confidently and defend decisions to senior leadership. Mentor designers, lead critiques and raise the design bar beyond your own work.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of product design experience, with recent hands-on work on large, ambiguous problems.
  • Excellent interaction and visual design skills across mobile and web, with a strong eye for hierarchy, typography, layout and detail.
  • A portfolio of shipped work showing how you framed the problem, your role, the direction you set and the results, backed by evidence. You have led work across several teams or product areas and brought designers, product managers and engineers behind a shared direction. You have set design direction and shaped what gets built alongside senior product and engineering leaders.
  • Strong systems thinking, with patterns or templates other designers have adopted.
  • A record of shipping accessible, inclusive products, and examples of decisions you made for people with disabilities, low digital literacy or limited devices.
  • Working knowledge of both research and data. You know which questions each answers, use them to set direction, and use them to judge whether shipped work succeeded.
  • Confidence to defend design decisions to senior leadership and willingness to change course based on evidence.
  • Experience mentoring designers and leading design critique.
  • Curiosity about customers whose devices, connectivity and digital habits differ from yours.
  • Hands-on use of AI tools to explore and prototype faster, with you remaining responsible for the judgment and quality of the output.
  • Experience designing for POS terminals is a strong plus. Experience in financial services, multiple markets or internal tools is also welcome.
