Sr Software Test Engineer - Future Forward Team

Description

The company builds the next generation of robotic surgical systems. The Future Forward engineering team is small and works closely together, and this role is a core part of it, not a back-of-the-line QA position.

You will shape how complex surgical software is verified from the start, working alongside development, clinical, systems, and regulatory colleagues.

Responsibilities

• Lead system verification for robotic surgical systems, setting the top-level test strategy and taking test protocols from design and development through to completion.
• Write and run test scripts and protocols that check functional software across multi-disciplinary robotic systems.
• Produce test reports that trace every requirement under test, so none are left unaccounted for.
• Own defects from logging through root cause analysis and impact assessment, working with software and cross-functional teams until each one is resolved.
• Join requirements discussions early and bring the system test view into design decisions.
• Take part in design change reviews, judge how each change affects testing, and lead regression analysis to confirm changes add no new risk.
• Analyze test data for non-conformance trends, then summarize findings in clear executive summaries with practical design improvement recommendations.
• Build a deep understanding of the system, both technically and from the user's point of view, and use it to design broader, more robust test coverage.

Requirements

• Hold a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or a related technical field.
• Have at least 8 years of experience testing complex electro-mechanical or robotic systems, or 6 years if you hold a master's degree.
• Understand requirements and system software architecture well enough to turn them into effective test methods.
• Have planned and carried out verification and validation (V&V) work for medical devices under quality and regulatory compliance frameworks.
• Bring a solid grounding in systems engineering, software quality assurance (SQA), and software design principles.
• Reason from first principles and have hands-on experience with failure mode and risk analysis (FMEA/FTA).
• Debug complex embedded software and electromechanical systems well.
• Communicate clearly: write precise test reports and explain technical issues to clinical stakeholders.
• Preferred: test automation experience is highly preferred, since the team is actively building automated verification pipelines and a strong automation background will stand out.
• Preferred: have built and implemented automated test frameworks for software or hardware systems.
• Preferred: be proficient in Python, MATLAB, JavaScript, or a similar scripting language for test automation.
• Preferred: have used unit test frameworks such as pytest, unittest, or Google Test.
• Preferred: have worked in Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing environments.
• Preferred: have experience integrating automated test execution into CI/CD.

Conditions

The company and/or its customers may require current proof of vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19. Requirements vary by role.

Some roles may be subject to U.S. export controls under the Export Administration Regulations (15 CFR §743.13(b)), particularly for nationals of countries under embargo or sanctions. Information in your application will be used to decide whether an export license must be obtained from the U.S. Government (which can take 3 to 6+ months) or a Technology Control Plan (TCP) must be put in place (typically adding about 2 weeks to hiring).

For export-controlled roles, any final offer depends on an approved export license and/or an executed TCP being in place before the start date. That deadline may or may not be flexible and will be set so it does not unreasonably delay hiring. Candidates will be told about any steps required.

Pay is set mainly by the job level the role is filled at and the candidate's qualifications, in line with applicable law.
