Description

You will lead the Computer Backup engineering group, the team behind a cross-platform desktop backup client for Windows and macOS and the cloud backend that receives, stores, and restores customer files.

The company provides cloud storage and backup to consumers, small and mid-sized businesses, enterprises, and developers in more than 150 countries. Its backup product protects the data of hundreds of thousands of customers.

Every engineer on the team reports to this role. Desktop and Backend Leads handle daily work in their areas, while you set direction, strategy, and budget.

The role is hands-on. You will join architecture talks, code reviews, and technical decisions on both the desktop and backend sides, and you will also guide strategy, spending, and the growth of your staff.

You will have direct access to senior leadership, shape the strategy and structure of a core product line, and own it end to end, from the desktop experience customers see to the backend that keeps their data safe.

The company works in a flat, low-bureaucracy setting alongside experienced engineering, product, and QA teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the full Computer Backup engineering team, with Desktop and Backend Leads managing daily work in their areas.
  • Set the long-term technical direction for the product so that architecture and platform choices keep working as the product and customer base grow.
  • Own the multi-quarter delivery strategy and work with Product leadership on the roadmap, including scope, schedule, and priorities.
  • Manage the team's budget and spending, aligning headcount, tooling, and infrastructure investment with business goals.
  • Make technical and organizational decisions with long-term impact, including shared platform components and infrastructure that other teams rely on.
  • Keep the desktop and backend areas aligned on shared goals and a consistent agile process.
  • Oversee sprint planning, backlog refinement, standups, and retrospectives so they run well and consistently across both areas.
  • Own delivery on both client and backend, from planning and design through build and post-launch support, working with dedicated QA and release teams.
  • Keep the backup client and backend services reliable, fast, and easy to maintain, since customers depend on them to protect their data.
  • Make testing a core habit by expanding unit tests and other automated coverage.
  • Join code reviews, architecture decisions, and problem solving on both desktop and server work.
  • Promote effective use of AI-assisted development tools, guide the team in agentic coding practices, and set norms for AI-augmented workflows.
  • Find bottlenecks, improve processes, and invest in tools and practices that help engineers work well.
  • Negotiate major matters with senior leadership and large customers, present the team in executive reviews, and raise risks and trade-offs with clear recommendations.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of engineering management experience, including managing managers or team leads, ideally in cloud, SaaS, desktop software, or platform engineering.
  • Experience setting long-term technical direction and system architecture for a growing product or platform.
  • Experience owning multi-quarter technical and delivery strategy and shaping a product roadmap.
  • Experience negotiating scope, schedule, and priorities with product and senior leadership.
  • Experience being accountable for a team or department budget, including resourcing and investment choices.
  • Deep experience with agile methods, including Scrum, sprint planning, backlog management, estimation, and retrospectives, and a record of running these well for a delivery team.
  • Proven experience leading distributed, remote engineering teams, with strong async communication and remote collaboration habits.
  • A strong software engineering background with deep system architecture expertise, able to take part hands-on in technical discussions, design reviews, and architecture decisions.
  • Solid understanding of the full software lifecycle, from requirements and design through deployment and production support.
  • A firm commitment to engineering quality, including unit testing and automated coverage, and a record of building testing into everyday team practice.
  • Experience shipping software for desktop clients, backend services, or both.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to work directly with senior leadership and major customers and to escalate risks early with clear recommendations.
  • Enthusiasm for how AI-assisted development is changing the way software is built.
  • Nice to have: familiarity with AI agentic coding tools such as Claude Code and Codex, which the team uses actively and values in leaders who encourage their adoption.
  • Candidates who do not meet every requirement are still encouraged to apply.
