This is an existing opening that remains open to new applications.
Artificial intelligence will be used in the hiring process for this role.
The data engineering group is building a shared data platform that moves data and configuration between vehicle ECUs and the cloud. The team is the only one at the company shipping software on every compute module, delivering libraries, apps and services on Android, Linux and QNX.
The platform has four areas. A control plane pulls configuration from the cloud and applies it across the ECUs. A data plane collects, processes and forwards vehicle data to cloud storage. An SDK lets application teams use the platform. Unified logging manages logs across the vehicle software stack.
Responsibilities
Lead a team that owns one or more of these four areas, hiring and developing its engineers.
Build software for production ECUs with tight CPU, memory, storage and bandwidth limits, working with application, platform, cloud, cybersecurity and privacy teams.
Own your areas from planning through release and field support, across Android, Linux and QNX.
Set technical direction for your areas and for how the control and data planes connect, covering configuration, arbitration, lifecycle, streaming and file-based transfer. Make architecture and design calls with the team.
Stay hands-on through design work, code and test reviews, and prototyping when needed.
Set goals, give feedback, and manage performance and career growth. Grow technical leads within the team.
Set standards for reliability, performance, data privacy and resource use on production ECUs.
Define and scale engineering practices across the data platform organization, including unit and integration testing, development process documentation and release criteria.
Shape the roadmap with application teams and product stakeholders based on their needs and fleet data requirements.
Work with platform, cloud, DevOps, cybersecurity and privacy teams to roll out software and configuration and to drive adoption of the platform and the data governance policy.
Report status, risks and tradeoffs to leadership and partner teams.
Run production operations: define health metrics, lead incident response, and drive root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or a related field.
6+ years in software development or systems engineering on Android, Linux and/or QNX.
2+ years managing software engineers, covering hiring, performance management and career development.
Proficiency in C, C++ and/or Java/Kotlin for Android, including platform-level integration.
Experience shipping software on production ECUs or other devices with limited CPU, memory, storage and bandwidth.
Experience with at least one of: control plane or fleet management software, data collection and transfer pipelines, logging or telemetry software, or SDKs and libraries used by other teams.
Experience designing telemetry for operational visibility and remote control at fleet scale.
Experience scaling data flows from ECU to cloud.
Track record of delivering critical software with strict requirements for reliability, performance and data privacy.
Experience leading technical initiatives across teams, including teams outside your reporting line.
Strong technical communication and design documentation skills, with the ability to present status, risks and tradeoffs to leadership.
Preferred: experience building a new team, including defining roles, hiring and setting team processes.
Preferred: experience delivering SDKs or libraries used by other engineering teams, including API design, versioning and adoption support.
Preferred: experience integrating with or building control plane services (configuration retrieval, arbitration, persistence and fallback) and data plane pipelines (streaming and file-based transfer).
Preferred: experience building fleet management, OTA or remote configuration systems.
Preferred: experience developing observability and logging components.
Preferred: experience designing driver or HMI-initiated capture flows, such as create and upload data.
Preferred: knowledge of automotive cybersecurity controls and data protection processes.
Preferred: familiarity with AWS, GCP or Azure and their device management services, such as IoT Hub, IoT Core, Pub/Sub or equivalent.
Preferred: exposure to OpenTelemetry, protobuf, gRPC or similar observability and data plane technologies.
Preferred: contributions to or interest in open source observability, logging and data pipeline projects, such as Fluent Bit.
Preferred: automotive domain knowledge, including ECU architectures, SoC platforms, diagnostics, and failure and crash analysis.
