Description

The company was founded in 2017, is based in Sunnyvale, California, and is valued at $15 billion. It builds the digital infrastructure that lets moving machines use intelligence, serving the automotive, defense, trucking, construction, mining and agriculture industries through tools and infrastructure, operating systems and autonomy.

Eighteen of the top 20 global automakers and the United States military and its allies rely on its solutions. Offices are in Sunnyvale, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Ft. Walton Beach, Ann Arbor, London, Stuttgart, Munich, Stockholm, Bangalore, Seoul and Tokyo.

The team is hiring map rendering engineers to own and maintain web-based rendering and editing tools for HD maps used in autonomous vehicles.

The company treats maps as one connected, self-correcting data loop for physical AI. Vehicle fleets gather ground truth from multimodal sensors, which feeds ingestion pipelines, change detection, machine learning models and real-time onboard localization and map fusion, so field data reaches the autonomy stack almost immediately.

The role sits on the Maps team and is a full-time position. Map data, including standard and HD maps, LiDAR point clouds and detailed 3D models, must be displayed and edited quickly across real operations and simulations. Use cases range from long-haul L4 commercial trucks and L2++ personal cars to mining rigs and tactical defense platforms.

The map editor is used every day by mapping specialists inside the company and by commercial customers to triage and edit maps. The team ships improvements to it daily and reuses the same engine for other mapping experiences, so the engine must handle many different use cases, including on-vehicle visualization.

Candidates who meet only part of the qualifications are still encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Own and advance a 3D WebGPU engine for map visualization and editing.
  • Bring that engine into products across the company, including the primary map editor.
  • Build web-based editing experiences that support multiple users at once.
  • Set performance standards and enforce them, targeting 120fps on any modern machine for country-scale HD maps.
  • Combine mapping tools from across the company and industry, covering map queries, validation and programmatic transforms.
  • Help specify data storage formats that suit map visualization.
  • Work with other engineers on data schemas and APIs designed for visualization.
  • Keep every 3D experience at the company consistent in integration and feel.
  • Advise customers on using map visualization to improve product quality and autonomy programs.

Requirements

  • A BS in Computer Science, Robotics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Graphics or a related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of deep work with web graphics such as WebGL, WebGPU, three.js or similar.
  • 2+ years of frontend development with TypeScript and one modern framework such as React, Svelte, Vue or SolidJS.
  • 3+ years of mapping experience, preferably with HD maps for autonomous driving.
  • Experience with scalable distributed systems, CI/CD, version control and cross-team work using Jira and Git-based tools.
  • 2+ years of backend programming and systems work in C++, Python, Go, JavaScript, SQL, Linux and Git.
  • 2+ years of performance-critical work in C, C++ or Rust.
  • Experience with native graphics APIs, especially on mobile devices.
  • Experience with WebAssembly.

Conditions

The company is an in-office company and expects full-time employees to work from the office 5 days a week.

Some flexibility is allowed, such as occasional remote work, starting from home before going to the office, or leaving early for family needs.

The in-office expectation does not apply to contractor positions.

The company is committed to accessible hiring, and for US-based roles, accommodations are available on request without affecting candidacy.
