Description

The company is a billion-dollar global firm based in Research Triangle Park, NC. It supplies in-store retail systems to well-known retail brands and holds the top installed market share worldwide.

In-store systems the company builds include self-checkout and loyalty rewards used by shoppers at major grocery and retail chains.

This is a senior, hands-on role. You write code every day, build prototypes on your own initiative, bring AI and agent workflows into every phase of work, and lead client engagements technically.

You will work in Dual-Track Agile. In Discovery you help test feasibility through rapid prototyping, and in Delivery you lead the work so that quality, traceability and measurable results hold up.

The role calls for retail platform knowledge (POS systems and store operations), cloud-native development experience, and fluency with generative and agentic AI tools, used to speed up delivery without weakening code quality or architecture.

The company will not sponsor visas for this position, now or in the future. You must be able to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

You must live near or within the Raleigh-Durham area.

Responsibilities

  • Build AI and agentic workflows into your daily development for design, prototyping, code generation, test cases, specification drafts and automated validation across the lifecycle.
  • Use AI-assisted development in your own work, set an example for the team, and make sure generative AI tools are used ethically and responsibly.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of delivery across Discovery and Delivery Tracks. Build validated prototypes, contribute to formal designs, break work into deliverables and ship accepted technical implementations.
  • Lead the Discovery Track by writing working prototypes and demoing them to test feasibility and get stakeholders aligned before full build.
  • Turn discovery results into delivery backlog items, and work with implementation teams to keep design intent, code quality and non-functional requirements intact.
  • Help produce technical designs for products and integrations, including ADRs, interface contracts, data models, sequence diagrams, migration and rollback plans, and traceability matrices. Work with architects on wider governance.
  • Act as the main technical lead in client engagements. Run workshops, present technical solutions, make trade-off decisions, secure approvals and serve as the subject-matter expert for your assigned platform areas.
  • Personally build critical components and complex features in modern retail platform stacks. Set the code quality bar through your own work and review and approve deliverables from implementation teams.
  • Apply and reinforce engineering standards, reusable integration patterns and non-functional requirements such as security, scalability and observability across client solutions.
  • Mentor engineers on AI-assisted development, Dual-Track workflows, specification-driven design and platform best practices, mainly through pair programming, code reviews and leading by example.
  • Help shape platform and product strategy by finding reusable assets, API-first designs and technical gaps that need investment.
  • Own risk analysis and mitigation for technical decisions, covering backward compatibility, data integrity and compliance constraints.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, plus 5+ years of experience.
  • Hands-on use of AI-assisted tools and workflows, such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code, for design, coding, test generation and documentation.
  • 5+ years of professional software development, with daily hands-on coding and prototyping in modern stacks.
  • 5+ years building cloud-native, microservices or event-driven systems, with Azure or an equivalent cloud platform.
  • Strong skill in technologies such as Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript and React or Vue.
  • Proven record of owning end-to-end delivery for medium-to-large projects, covering design, implementation and post-release operational responsibility.
  • Track record of building production code, prototypes and reference implementations to prove a solution is feasible.
  • Solid experience with REST/OpenAPI, messaging platforms, and relational and non-relational databases (SQL and NoSQL).
  • Hands-on work with CI/CD, containers, Docker, Kubernetes, deployment tooling, automated testing and AI or agentic workflows that speed up the software lifecycle.
  • Practical use of generative AI and AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or Cursor, with measurable impact on delivery.
  • Strong stakeholder communication: running workshops, presenting technical solutions and working across business and engineering teams.
  • Proven record of mentoring engineers, doing thorough code reviews and promoting engineering best practices across teams.
  • Preferred: strong retail platform knowledge (POS systems, store operations), which is highly desirable.
  • Preferred: Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect or equivalent cloud credentials.
  • Preferred: strong grasp of advanced security practices and compliance requirements in enterprise systems.
  • Preferred: experience leading Dual-Track Agile, managing both Discovery and Delivery Tracks and turning discovery results into actionable backlog items.
  • Preferred: experience shaping platform strategy, reusable assets and API-first designs.
  • Preferred: expertise in formal or machine-readable specifications (OpenAPI, UML+OCL, TLA+ or equivalent) to guide implementation and enable automated validation.
