Description

The group's chief operating office is one of its largest areas, bringing together the technology, engineering and operations teams that keep the business running.

Software engineers sit in platform teams across the function, each aligned to one part of the business: commercial markets, pensions, retail banking, mortgages, HR, Finance or Risk.

This two-year graduate scheme involves building and maintaining the applications, platforms and digital services that millions of customers and colleagues use daily, including mobile banking, cloud infrastructure and AI-enabled solutions.

You will do everything a Junior Software Engineer does, building deep skills in one team from the start while your work reaches across the business.

The application deadline is Sunday 15 November 2026. Places can fill quickly, and schemes may close ahead of their dates when applications are high, so apply early.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside experienced engineers, product teams, architects and technical specialists to build software that matters to customers and colleagues.
  • Write code in languages such as Java, Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Swift, Rust and Golang.
  • Apply cloud development, automation and continuous testing to live delivery work.
  • Improve apps, digital journeys, APIs, AI-enabled tools and platforms used across the bank.
  • Use technology to fix real problems, improve experiences and make the business work better.
  • Learn how software is designed, built and shipped at large scale.
  • Move from learning to delivering work quickly, taking on real business challenges in live environments.
  • Keep pace with current engineering practices, tools and technologies.

Requirements

  • Understanding of modern engineering practices, including cloud development, automation and continuous testing.
  • Strong grounding in languages such as Java, Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Swift, Rust and Golang is advantageous.
  • You may work on AI-enabled solutions, but this is a software engineering programme first. If your main interest is artificial intelligence, machine learning or data science, the Data Science programme is likely a better fit.
  • The company cannot sponsor visas.

Conditions

Salary of £48,500.

You will choose one regional office for the whole programme from London, Halifax, Leeds, Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh.

Hybrid working: a minimum of two days a week in your assigned office.

Applications open 10 September and close 29 November, except for London, which closes 11 October.

Sensitive information is only requested after an interview invitation or verbal offer, when background checks are run.

Alternative application formats are available on request. The company is committed to an inclusive workplace that reflects the communities it serves, regardless of background, identity or culture.

Benefits

  • A structured learning path delivered through manageable training modules.
  • Room to build on what you already know and to grow in areas that interest you.
  • Direct learning from software engineers and technical specialists.
  • Optional, industry-recognised cloud certifications, such as Google and Azure, to build your technical expertise.
