Description

The company is a global edge-to-cloud business that helps other organisations connect, protect, analyze and act on their data and applications, from the edge through to the cloud.

The role sits in the High-Performance Networking Platform team, part of the R&D organisation that builds the company's core and new products.

The team is looking for a motivated software engineer with strong technical and interpersonal skills, hands-on experience with large-scale networks and public and private cloud platforms, and enthusiasm for building distributed, large-scale network fabrics. Interest in high-performance computing (HPC) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the strategic direction of the network architecture.
  • Build critical functions for the switch and NIC data plane, including drivers that configure, control and monitor custom ASICs, and APIs for the layers above.
  • Implement features to specification, with high performance, resiliency and scalability as the main goals.
  • Share knowledge with the wider community through written guides and presentations.
  • Take part in the wider R&D leadership community across the company.
  • Design changes and enhancements to systems software, such as operating systems, compilers, networking, utilities, databases and internet-related tools.
  • Review designs and decide which coding, programming and integration work is needed, based on project goals and the overall product architecture.
  • Write and run test plans, protocols and documentation for your part of the application, then find, debug and fix issues in the code and its integration.
  • Lead a project team of software systems engineers and internal and outsourced development partners to deliver reliable, cost-effective, high-quality work on your assigned system or subsystem.
  • Keep management, internal teams and outsourced partners informed about design status, progress and issue resolution.
  • Represent the software systems engineering team across all phases of larger, more complex projects.
  • Guide and mentor less experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, information systems or an equivalent field.
  • 5+ years of Linux kernel programming experience.
  • Deep expertise in network operating systems.
  • Experience designing software systems that run on several platform types.
  • A structured approach to testing: writing and running test plans, debugging, and building test scripts and tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • The ability to explain product architectures and design proposals clearly, and to negotiate options with management.
