Senior Virtualization Engineer

The Virtualization team provides scalable on-premises compute to the company's trading desks, data scientists and enterprise application teams. The team favours simple, scalable solutions built on off-the-shelf tools, with focused engineering where needed.

The team is hiring a Senior Engineer to help guide the design and build of a new OpenStack-based virtualization platform. You will shape key architecture decisions, set engineering standards, find and remove risks, and keep performance high and costs under control.

Responsibilities

• Own and improve the infrastructure, processes and standards of the Virtualization platform.
• Automate repetitive manual tasks wherever you can.
• Design, implement and run OpenStack clouds, including deploying, configuring and maintaining its components.
• Diagnose and fix complex problems that span compute, storage and networking and involve several teams.
• Give users of the platform excellent service.
• Coach engineers on best practice, help investigate outages and set a high bar for operational and technical quality.
• Troubleshoot and resolve critical production issues in a high-intensity trading environment as part of an on-call rotation.

Requirements

• Expert-level experience administering OpenStack.
• Deep knowledge of networking, storage, Linux and virtualization fundamentals.
• Proficiency with industry-standard infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
• Scripting or coding experience in several languages, such as Python, Golang and Bash.
• Experience maintaining, deploying and configuring server hardware and deploying virtual machines.
• A service-minded approach: you ask questions and find the right resources and answers for people rather than hiding behind rigid boundaries.
• Strong written and verbal communication. You can work across teams and back up technical and operational points with evidence.
• You lead by example and build technical and soft skills in your teammates.
• Nice to have: experience with VMware ESXi.
• Nice to have: experience with containerization and Kubernetes.
• Nice to have: experience administering on-premises infrastructure.
• Nice to have: experience building, deploying and supporting full stack web applications.
• Nice to have: experience using several programming languages in both greenfield development and legacy maintenance.
