Description

The company is building hands-off and eyes-off self-driving systems meant for wide use in consumer cars. It is investing in sensors and system architectures that can be integrated, validated, and run reliably at scale across different vehicle programs and environments.

This role supports the test and data collection vehicles used to design future sensing systems. You will work directly with next-generation sensors for eyes-off driving and the vehicles they are mounted on, coordinating integration with other teams, supporting testing, finding the root cause of sensor and software faults, helping run data collection campaigns, and handling related tasks.

The work is hands-on at the Detroit and Milford sites. Travel to other test locations happens as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Decide where sensors go on test and donor vehicles, and confirm the placement with the Integration team.
  • Plan and run on-vehicle data collection in parking lots, on closed courses, and on public roads to check sensor placement and field of view (FOV), and to spot physical interference early.
  • Find and fix physical and mechanical integration problems, such as unfinished camera ISP work, occlusion, or keep-out zone (KOZ) violations, before they turn into late, expensive changes.
  • Lead or help with sensor-specific tests for optical and radar sensors.
  • Debug and assess communication, timing, diagnostics, and other software issues on development and production systems.
  • Help write test and validation plans, checking that their scope and coverage are complete.
  • Work with embedded, sensor, and perception teams to find the root cause of sensor and software issues found in integrated testing.
  • Record findings and test results thoroughly and completely.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years in sensor integration, embedded software testing, sensor validation, or hardware test engineering.
  • Hands-on experience testing cameras, lidar, radar, or acoustic sensors on vehicles or other complex hardware.
  • Working knowledge of cameras, lidar, and radar, including FOV, KOZ, and mounting tolerances, and how these shape fixture and bracket design.
  • Comfortable planning and running on-vehicle data collection, including coordinating driving across parking lots, closed courses, and public roads.
  • Strong computer skills, plus an understanding of networking and automotive communication buses.
  • Strong communication skills for working across teams.
  • Preferred qualifications: experience on L4 autonomous vehicle programs; experience in the automotive sector; familiarity with autonomous vehicle sensor suites and the integration constraints specific to AVs; experience building test infrastructure or tooling, such as mobile test rigs, from scratch; ability to program and build tooling, dashboards, or data analytics.

Conditions

This is an onsite, full-time role at a specific location.

Travel is required at less than 25%.

The role is subject to export control restrictions, so the successful candidate must be a U.S. Person (a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee).

Candidates may be asked, where applicable, to complete a role-related assessment and/or a pre-employment screening before they start.

The company is committed to a workplace free of unlawful discrimination that also fosters inclusion.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • Well-being support starts on day one, at work and at home. Total rewards information is available from the company.
