Description

The company started as a credit card startup and is now a Fortune 100 firm. Its four businesses are Card, Retail Banking, Commercial Banking and Financial Services, supported by an Enterprise Services group that runs its digital and technology platforms.

The team is building a new payment network by merging three existing networks into one modern system. Rather than keeping three acceptance footprints, data models and operating teams, the network is being rebuilt from scratch so that a card issued anywhere can be used anywhere on it. The work offers a chance to shape how data flows through a very large payment network, not to maintain an existing one.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of the real-time and batch data infrastructure that other teams on the network depend on, including ingestion, streaming, the shared data model, and the catalog and metadata layer that acts as one trusted source of record.
  • Work at the meeting point of the Core Network, Fraud/AML, Analytics and Modeling teams, helping define how the data platform is built from the ground up.
  • Design real-time, event-driven pipelines that carry authorization, transaction, settlement and fraud-relevant events across the network with the latency and exactly-once delivery a payment network requires. Fraud and risk decisions will run on this infrastructure.
  • Define a canonical data model that merges three legacy schemes, each with its own merchant hierarchies, participant identities and transaction meanings. Translate legacy formats only at the network edge so they never move inward.
  • Build the catalog and metadata layer, including schema registry, lineage, data contracts and access policy, so downstream teams work from one shared source instead of reverse-engineering their own.
  • Set architecture and standards for streaming, storage and low-latency serving at network scale, and promote data standardization inside the company and with partner teams.
  • Act as the deep technical authority across data engineering. Favor open, well-understood components over one-off tools so new engineers can understand the platform quickly.
  • Work directly with Fraud/AML, Analytics and Canonical Modeling leaders so your architecture unblocks their roadmaps.
  • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the organization, with influence but no direct reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
  • At least 9 years in each of: software engineering and solution architecture, enterprise architecture and design patterns, cloud computing on AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud, and data architecture.
  • Preferred: master's degree in computer science or software engineering.
  • Preferred: 12+ years in each of: software engineering and solution architecture, enterprise architecture and design patterns, web technologies (JavaScript, TypeScript and SPA frameworks), designing distributed HPC and ML systems, cloud computing on AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud, and data architecture.
  • Preferred: deep experience designing event-driven, real-time streaming systems at scale, such as with Kafka, Flink or similar.
  • Preferred: experience with distributed storage, catalog, and metadata or lineage systems, such as Iceberg and data lakehouse architectures.
  • Preferred: experience designing canonical or shared data models that unify disparate or legacy systems.
  • Preferred: experience building highly available, low-latency distributed systems in a regulated, high-stakes area such as payments, fraud, financial transaction processing or similar.
