Description

The company is hiring for this role at several engineering levels. Your level will be set by your experience, technical depth, demonstrated impact, and performance in interviews.

You will join the Compute Engineering group, which builds the systems for scheduling, capacity, and performance that power the platform on both private and public cloud.

Responsibilities

  • Create and upkeep declarative, software-defined infrastructure for compute at large scale, including build systems, services, and automation that are documented, specified, and testable.
  • Develop and enhance parts of the compute scheduler and resource management systems, covering placement, prioritization, and preemption.
  • Build tools that gather capacity data and support forecasting and reporting across private and public cloud.
  • Write performance and load tests, and catch regressions in scheduling latency and throughput.
  • Evaluate open-source and commercial tools and methods that make compute more efficient and reliable, and adopt the ones that fit.
  • Work with networking, orchestration, and SRE teams on integration and system design.
  • Join design reviews and on-call rotations, and help drive improvements after incidents.
  • Apply AI tools to speed up development and analysis, and look for places where ML can improve capacity or placement decisions.

Requirements

  • Senior level: deliver well-defined features and components with guidance, write, test, and debug code on your own within a system, and carry your work all the way to production.
  • Staff level: own a component or feature area end to end, including scoping and design, lead design discussions for a team, mentor IC3 engineers, and spot risks before they turn into incidents.
  • Experience using AI in your work, such as AI-powered tools, workflow automation, analysis of AI-driven insights, or assessing how AI could affect your function or industry.
  • 5+ years of related experience in software engineering, cloud, or infrastructure automation with a Bachelor's degree; or 3+ years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant research or industry experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, Go, or Java, plus experience with related languages.
  • Experience building and maintaining Linux-based systems with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Comfortable working with virtualization and cloud infrastructure on private and public clouds such as Azure, AWS, and GCP.
  • Working knowledge of IP networking, block and file storage, and load balancers.
  • Working knowledge of internet protocols such as DNS, NTP, and HTTP.
  • You work independently across interconnected systems and find root causes without waiting to be told where to look.
  • You are a continuous learner who wants to build new skills and deliver real improvements for internal and external customers.
  • You communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • You act with integrity and honesty, and uphold the company's values.
  • Staff level, additionally: you drive architectural discussions and shape technical decisions that simplify and streamline infrastructure, you have led the design and delivery of a component or feature area end to end, and you have mentored engineers and helped them grow technically.
  • Preferred: experience with capacity planning, performance testing, or load testing.
  • Preferred: experience with Kubernetes, Slurm, or other large-scale schedulers or resource managers.
  • Preferred: experience with ML-driven scheduling, forecasting, or capacity optimization.
  • Preferred: experience with release management and large-scale server infrastructure.
