Description

The team is the Network File Integration group, which builds software for batch and event-driven processing of card network settlement and transaction data. The role is a senior software engineer position on that team.

The company runs a card issuing platform that lets businesses issue cards, authorize transactions, and manage payment operations in real time. It is an early player in embedded finance.

You will own projects that support the team's quarterly goals and work out your own approach to open-ended problems that have no clear answer yet. You will work with your team and with partners across other functions.

This is an existing vacancy.

The hiring process has five steps: application submission, a recruiter video call, a coding interview followed by a video call with the hiring manager, a virtual onsite made up of three 60-minute calls, and then an offer.

Responsibilities

  • Build and run card network transaction processing at scale.
  • Create digital wallet tokens for Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • Build backend services for internal teams and external customers.
  • Help shorten the time it takes to get cards to customers.
  • Handle chargebacks and disputes with card networks.
  • Move money through ACH and ATM networks.
  • Apply APRs and fees to credit customers.
  • Build a 3DS access control system.
  • Find ways to move quality backend software from idea to production more quickly.
  • You may focus on DevOps and infrastructure, advising on how services run and how cloud infrastructure should be set up to handle scale, resilience, and global availability.
  • Design, architect, and build large, complex projects.
  • Work with other engineers to prioritize and ship features.
  • Work with product managers to scope and estimate new work.
  • Take part in on-call coverage.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in software or data engineering, ideally in payments or financial services processing.
  • You can drive results with limited direction.
  • You write high-quality code with thorough test coverage.
  • Experience developing in Java, Python, or both. Experience in other languages is also welcome.
  • A track record of designing, building, and scaling batch and streaming or event-driven data pipelines with tools such as Apache Spark or distributed query engines like Athena, Trino, or Presto.
  • Hands-on experience building reliable data lakes with Iceberg or Delta Lake, keeping data accurate, schemas intact, and the lake working with distributed query engines.
  • Experience making technical trade-offs and working through technical complexity.
  • Experience mentoring other engineers.
  • You can quickly find the root cause of production issues and recommend or make fixes.
  • Humility and empathy, and openness to constructive feedback.
  • A drive to grow, learn, share ideas, and help others do the same.
  • Experience working well on cross-functional teams with a collaborative approach.
  • Nice to have: experience with payments or FinTech.
  • Nice to have: experience with microservices.
  • Nice to have: experience with Java Spring Boot.
  • Nice to have: experience with Airflow.
  • Nice to have: production experience with modern engineering and cloud tools. The company uses AWS but welcomes other cloud experience.
  • Nice to have: experience with CI/CD systems, software delivery pipelines, and deployment and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or Docker.
  • Nice to have: contributions to technical blogs, a public GitHub repository, or open source projects.
