Your opportunity

We are a global team of innovators and pioneers dedicated to shaping the future of observability. At New Relic, we build an intelligent platform that empowers companies to thrive in an AI-first world by giving them unparalleled insight into their complex systems. As we continue to expand our global footprint, we're looking for passionate people to join our mission. If you're ready to help the world's best companies optimize their digital applications, we invite you to explore a career with us!

Every experience we build is only as good as our understanding of the person using it. You’ll support that understanding with resilient, well-architected systems and senior technical judgment. You'll pioneer how we distill user behavior across classic interfaces and newer surfaces like agentic conversations into models the rest of the platform depends on.

This position is for the Personalization team, starting with a greenfield project! Our stack centers on Java 25, Spring, GraphQL, NoSQL, Kubernetes, Kafka and AWS.

If you're passionate about understanding user behavior at scale and want to help shape how New Relic's classic and agentic experiences adapt to the people using them, we want to hear from you.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture and technical direction of a significant, moderately-scoped service within the behavioral data platform, from design through delivery
  • Champion the delivery of full components and support the lead engineer in coordinating feedback and work across the team
  • Collaborate with product managers, stakeholders and customer teams to clarify requirements and distill them into a clear technical plan
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks (including gaps against SLAs or other reliability commitments) before they become production issues
  • Facilitate healthy, data-driven design debates, making sure the team explores multiple options and weighs trade-offs before committing
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to less experienced engineers, and act as an expert operator of the services you own
  • Contribute to improving team processes so we can deliver quality software regularly and incrementally
  • Actively use AI coding assistants and agents in your own workflow, and help set the standard for how the team adopts them
  • Help organize and lead technical communities of practice, not just participate in them
  • This role requires
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in Java and backend service design, with a track record of delivering production code that follows solid security, reliability, and maintainability practices
  • Experience building and operating Kafka-based streaming pipelines and services in a cloud (AWS) production environment
  • Strong experience with distributed systems, concurrency, and scaling, including diagnosing and resolving complex production issues
  • A track record of mentoring engineers and providing constructive direction in code reviews and design discussions
  • Comfortable partnering directly with product managers and stakeholders to shape technical scope from ambiguous requirements
  • Sound judgment in selecting the right approach on issues of moderate to broad scope
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build consensus across differing technical viewpoints
  • Proficiency in English
  • Bonus points if you have
  • Experience designing GraphQL APIs or microservices architectures at scale
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes concepts and ability to reason about production behavior
  • Experience with distributed data processing in the cloud (Spark, Hadoop/Hive, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift) or ETL/orchestration tools such as Airflow
  • Deep understanding of data modeling principles (dimensional modeling, normalization), especially applied to behavioral or user segmentation
  • Experience evaluating, benchmarking, or building custom agentic AI tools, prompt workflows, or developer automation
  • Exposure to recommendation systems or building context for agentic/LLM-based experiences
  • Experience with SQL performance tuning or data visualization tools (Tableau, Looker)
  • A track record of technical mentorship beyond your immediate team
  • Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Fostering a diverse, welcoming and inclusive environment is important to us. We work hard to make everyone feel comfortable bringing their best, most authentic selves to work every day. We celebrate our talented Relics’ different backgrounds and abilities, and recognize the different paths they took to reach us – including nontraditional ones. Their experiences and perspectives inspire us to make our products and company the best they can be. We’re looking for people who feel connected to our mission and values, not just candidates who check off all the boxes.
  • We believe in empowering all Relics to achieve professional and business success through a flexible workforce model. This model allows us to work in a variety of workplaces that best support our success, including fully office-based, fully remote, or hybrid.
