Description

At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most.

About the Engineering team

The Engineering team builds systems that power Affirm’s mission. We take pride in our craft, building reliable, performant, and scalable solutions that touch every part of the business. Whether we’re enabling new ways to pay, ensuring our platforms can scale to the most demanding levels in the industry, or developing seamless servicing experiences, our focus is on solving complex problems through exceptional engineering.

About the role

We are reinventing credit cards entirely. We are working directly with card issuers to change how credit is used throughout the world, creating new types of cards that work for both their everyday lives and large purchases with extremely straightforward, flexible terms. We are looking for a Senior Manager Software Engineering to lead teams centered around integrations with partners, processors, and internationalization. Your mission will be to decrease the time it takes for our teams to integrate with external partners dramatically and allow us to launch cards as soon as we launch Affirm in a new country. You’ll partner with other engineering leaders in revolutionizing the way the team works, shaping the culture of engineering across Cards.

You will lead from the front on AI while holding the bar high on quality. You’ll collaborate with other managers across the organization to create a psychologically safe team. You will work closely with stakeholders in the EU and US to build products customers want, and are scalable, reliable, and high-performing. You'll help shape best practices, guide architectural choices, and drive the successful delivery of critical initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Hire the right people - We are still actively growing our teams in Spain and Poland. You will lead the way on hiring.
  • Build the team culture - Set a high standard and great team culture in your growing organization.
  • Lead the vision – Define the technical direction, long-term technical roadmap, and strategic initiatives in Cards.
  • Be a role model - Lead from the front as an example in using AI to build fast, take initiative, and revolutionize how we work.
  • Work closely with stakeholders across all teams at Affirm to champion and implement technical excellence in conjunction with business results
  • Create and influence a strong ownership culture across teams, with high accountability and investment for building for scale and efficiency
  • Mentor and lead – Guide a strong group of managers and engineers
  • On-Call Rotation - There would be an on-call rotation for this role as a requirement.

Requirements

  • You have 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years managing engineering teams and 2+ years managing managers.
  • You have led a multi-team engineering org through a multi-year technical strategy, breaking ambiguous requirements into deliverables that shipped.
  • You have the technical depth to guide architecture, reliability and quality decisions across a portfolio of systems. You also let tech leads and architects make the calls.
  • You make investment and prioritization decisions even when people disagree or consensus is incomplete, and you change course when the evidence changes.
  • You explain strategy, risk and tradeoffs in terms that make sense to engineers, cross-functional partners and executives.
  • You have grown managers into senior leaders and built teams where diverse perspectives are included and valued on merit.
  • This position requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
