Senior Software Engineer - Python/Java

Description

The company's News Engineering group is hiring a senior software engineer to help evolve its News platform, which delivers enriched breaking news to customers worldwide in sub-second time.

The role suits engineers who work well as individual contributors and can also lead a scrum team. You will deepen your skills in low-latency, high-throughput systems, with clear routes into technical leadership, architecture, reliability, or applied ML for news analytics.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve services, mainly in Java and Python, focusing on performance, observability and continuous improvement in a cloud-native environment.
• Try new tools, libraries and approaches when they improve reliability, performance or developer experience.
• Learn how structured data and News industry standards allow fast, reliable news delivery that is simpler for customers.
• Work in a scrum team to design solutions and deliver new features.
• Own the design and delivery of critical services, from architecture decisions through to production support, and influence technical direction.
• Automate deployment, upgrades and maintenance using modern DevOps practices.
• Take part in an on-call rotation designed around sustainability, automation and preventing repeat incidents.

Requirements

• Solid experience with Java and Python on Linux and in real-time systems.
• Practical experience with IP-based protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP and HTTPS.
• Familiarity with unit testing and test-driven development.
• Understanding of search technology such as Elasticsearch.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and container orchestration.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and communicate clearly.
• Optional: hands-on experience with GitLab CI/CD, Kubernetes or Terraform.
• Optional: experience using GitHub Copilot in engineering work.
• Optional: knowledge of NewsMLG2 or similar standards, and experience implementing a standard format at speed.

Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location, city and state. The role is also eligible for the Variable Incentive Compensation plan, with target variable pay set by the posted career stage. Individual pay reflects job-related knowledge, skills and equivalent experience.

Roles of 20 hours or more per week, excluding internships, are typically eligible for the benefits program.
