Senior Software Engineer - Runtime Services

The company is building a fully in-house hands-free driver assistance platform that is set to launch in 2027 on a new vehicle from its parent, a major automaker.

You would work alongside specialists in machine learning, robotics, cloud platforms, mapping, sensors, compute, test operations, and systems and safety engineering, all working to change how millions of drivers relate to their cars.

The company operates independently as a subsidiary of its automaker parent and moves at startup pace. It is headquartered in Pittsburgh, with engineering centers in Dearborn, Michigan, and Palo Alto, California.

The Runtime Services team builds the core C++ libraries, custom data structures, and configuration, serialization, and code generation frameworks that every developer uses across the company on real-time Linux and embedded systems. The team also owns the driver monitoring system that enforces safe use of autonomy features.

In this role you will help build and maintain the foundational software the driver assistance system runs on, working with other runtime teams, systems engineering, autonomy, the onboard platform team, and project management so applications fit together.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test reliable, high-performance software that all autonomy functions depend on
• Build tools that show how the system is performing and behaving
• Work with autonomy teams so their systems fit the runtime infrastructure and they can succeed
• Write automated unit and integration tests that confirm the software behaves as expected and meets its requirements
• Partner with the simulation team so the runtime is tested accurately off-vehicle in a virtual environment
• Help shape software architecture within your area of ownership
• Work with Product Security and Functional Safety to harden the system and meet automotive safety standards

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field plus 4+ years of relevant experience, or a master's degree plus 2+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD
• Proven hands-on experience building high-performance C++ applications or robotics software for resource-constrained environments
• 5+ years of developing with modern C++ in a systems programming role
• Ability to design software components and systems and explain those designs clearly in documents, diagrams, and presentations
• Experience developing on Linux or Unix
• Works well on cross-functional teams to deliver an integrated software product
• Experience with Bazel
• Experience with ROS or another robotics platform
• Experience managing large-scale configuration and composition using formats such as JSON or YAML
• Experience writing custom plugins for the Protobuf compiler, protoc
• Experience with driver monitoring systems
• Experience with publish/subscribe communication systems such as Iceoryx or ZeroMQ
• Experience with distributed and concurrent programming
• Experience with POSIX APIs
• Experience with embedded and real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS or SafeRTOS
• Familiarity with ISO 26262 and/or other software safety standards

Conditions

Full-time position

The expected base salary range in California is $179,200 to $268,800 USD

Starting pay depends on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level

You must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis; employment eligibility is verified at hire
