Description

The company is a global healthcare technology firm with around 95,000 employees in more than 150 countries, and its devices reach over 72 million patients a year.

The team, the company Digital Technologies, builds connected products that give surgeons real-time guidance and decision support in the operating room.

The work centres on compact, high-performance embedded systems for edge computing and connectivity, and on computer vision to give a fuller view of surgery.

The role works closely with other teams across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Take backend and services work from design through to production, and own its delivery.
  • Lead technical design for complex features, services and components, and contribute to design work across the team.
  • Spot risks early and define how to mitigate them.
  • Write high-quality code, mostly in Python, and take an active part in code reviews.
  • Make systems easier to test, observe, maintain and rely on.
  • Mentor teammates through code review, pairing and design feedback.
  • Hold designs to high engineering standards, with clarity, scalability and maintainability.
  • Work with product, systems, QA, clinical and domain, and engineering colleagues to deliver dependable solutions.
  • Write clear technical documentation covering architecture, design rationale and system context, so teammates can build on it without help.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Backend or systems engineering experience, ideally with strong Python skills.
  • Experience designing, building and running distributed systems in production, with a solid grasp of trade-offs between performance, scalability and reliability.
  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS preferred), databases, APIs and modern DevOps practices.
  • A strong focus on quality, including testing strategies, code review and system reliability.
  • A record of owning substantial backend or systems work from design to production, raising risks early, choosing pragmatic solutions and standing behind quality.
  • A track record of making progress with incomplete information, breaking down complex problems and adjusting when requirements change.
  • Excellent documentation skills and experience handing projects over to others.
  • You must be willing to commute to London two to three days per week.
  • Interest in AI-assisted or agentic coding workflows, with sound judgment on code review, testing and responsible use of generated code. Experience with agentic coding tools as a product is a plus.

Conditions

Hybrid setup: you must be willing to commute to London two to three days per week.

The company is an equal opportunity employer.

Benefits

  • A competitive salary and flexible benefits package.
  • A wide range of benefits, resources and compensation plans to support you at every career and life stage.
  • Eligibility for the company Incentive Plan (MIP), a short-term incentive.
  • UK pay range: 76,800.00 GBP to 115,200.00 GBP. The final salary is set by objective, job-related criteria such as relevant experience, skills and qualifications, under the company's compensation framework.
