Description

The company designs, builds, manages and modernizes mission-critical technology systems that clients depend on every day.

The AI Led Application Modernization team builds new applications and modernizes existing ones, including mainframe, Fortran, J2EE and ASP front ends, for Fortune 100 clients.

The team is relatively new within the company and works with a startup mindset, focused on how AI is changing the way software is made.

The role is titled Application Consultant and sits in the company's consultant profession alongside consultants, architects, project managers and technical specialists.

This is a hands-on senior role that blends development with technical leadership, shaping how delivery teams approach architecture, engineering practice, modernization and AI adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of developers through new builds and modernization programs while staying involved in design, coding, review, testing and troubleshooting.
  • Set the technical course for projects, covering architecture, integration patterns, modernization strategy, engineering standards, delivery approach and technical risk.
  • Make sound decisions on APIs, data models, cloud services, security, observability, integration, DevSecOps and user experience.
  • Assess legacy code, identify the business logic inside it, weigh constraints, define a target architecture and plan incremental transformation.
  • Build agents and agentic workflows where they suit the client problem, using frameworks such as LangGraph, A2A, MCP-enabled tools or comparable technologies.
  • Apply AI-assisted tools to speed up code comprehension, generation, refactoring, testing, documentation and migration planning, and validate every output with engineering judgment.
  • Spot and manage risks in AI-generated software, including brittle code, hidden assumptions, weak tests, security flaws, licensing concerns, maintainability gaps and architecture drift.
  • Mentor developers in engineering practice, AI-assisted delivery, secure coding, automated testing, maintainable design and code review.
  • Work with architects, product owners, business stakeholders, client technical teams and delivery leaders to turn business needs into executable plans.
  • Produce reusable patterns, accelerators, prompts, agents, reference architectures and engineering practices for the wider team.
  • Build relationships with customers, learn their business goals and long-term plans, and advise on how technology can help them.
  • Run needs assessments, gather requirements from stakeholders, and write functional and nonfunctional specifications using use cases, requirement traceability and process flows.
  • Help customers select, customize and choose between multiple applications, including packaged solutions.
  • Plan design and implementation against time, cost and quality targets, and advise on hardware and operating system compatibility, data conversion and training needs.

Requirements

  • Seven years of hands-on experience building production-quality applications.
  • Experience leading developers through mentoring, code review, technical planning, delivery guidance and issue resolution.
  • Experience setting technical direction for software delivery, covering architecture decisions, engineering standards, delivery patterns and technical risk.
  • Working knowledge of at least one modern programming language such as Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, C, Go or a comparable language.
  • Experience with new application development, application modernization, or both.
  • Practical use of AI-assisted tools for coding, refactoring, testing, documentation, debugging, code comprehension and architecture exploration.
  • Ability to review AI-generated code for correctness, security, maintainability, performance, testability and fit with architecture and requirements.
  • Familiarity with agentic concepts and experience building or prototyping agents with LangGraph, A2A, MCP-enabled tools or similar frameworks.
  • Strong grasp of architecture and engineering basics, including APIs, data models, integration patterns, automated testing, version control, CI/CD, secure coding, observability and operational support.
  • Ability to analyze existing codebases, spot modernization opportunities, define target-state architecture and plan pragmatic incremental change.
  • Ability to communicate technical direction clearly to developers, architects, stakeholders and client teams.
  • Growth mindset and genuine interest in how AI will reshape the software development profession.
  • Preferred: experience modernizing legacy estates such as mainframe, Fortran, J2EE, ASP, monolithic or other enterprise applications.
  • Preferred: experience architecting cloud-native applications, APIs, microservices, event-driven systems or modern front-end experiences.
  • Preferred: hands-on work with LangGraph, A2A, MCP, OpenAI or Anthropic APIs, Semantic Kernel, CrewAI or comparable agent and orchestration frameworks.
  • Preferred: experience designing agents that interact with enterprise tools, repositories, documentation, tickets, CI/CD pipelines, runtime telemetry or application data.
  • Preferred: experience defining architecture guardrails, reference implementations, coding standards, reusable components or engineering playbooks for delivery teams.
  • Preferred: familiarity with DevSecOps, automated quality gates, observability, containerization, infrastructure as code and secure delivery pipelines.
  • Preferred: experience with retrieval-augmented generation, vector databases, tool calling, evaluation harnesses, prompt engineering, LLM application testing or agent observability.
  • Preferred: experience in Agile delivery with product owners, architects, business stakeholders, client executives and distributed engineering teams.
  • Preferred: ability to mentor and influence other developers in practical, responsible and effective use of AI-assisted development.
