Description

The team is an applied AI and machine learning group that personalizes every real-time decision inside the rider app, including search, ride options, content selection and ranking, and message generation.

Since last year the team has contributed a large share of the company's financial results. It is working with the rider app team to make the app more personalized and responsive in real time.

The team acts as the orchestration layer behind everything riders see and makes the final call on what appears on screen.

You will work with ML engineers, AI engineers and data scientists to set objectives for the team's models. You will also talk with other groups to understand the needs of the app's stakeholders and the company's goals. Your job is to pick the outcomes worth pursuing and turn them into one objective the apps can use end to end, weighing short-term against long-term trade-offs and the goals of partner teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own the roadmap for applied ML and AI products on every rider app screen across the rider conversion funnel.
  • Define the single objective the rider app should maximize or minimize, balancing short-term and long-term value with the goals of stakeholder teams such as loyalty, partnerships, ads, business, autonomous vehicles, safety and luxury.
  • Set, track and regularly report the team's metrics and KPIs, and be directly accountable for the financial outcomes the team drives.
  • Work with data science to measure and forecast the long-term value of riders.
  • Plan how to cold start new regions, modes and features so adoption grows without hurting algorithm performance.
  • Join a cross-functional group that builds a unified rider profile by identifying, collecting and organizing rider information for ML and AI training.
  • Write detailed product requirements, strategy and planning documents for both technical and non-technical readers, setting milestone expectations and making delivery predictable.
  • Design, run and analyze experiments and ongoing evaluation systems that monitor model performance and confirm improvements.
  • Report team progress to non-technical leadership every month, covering wins and roadblocks.

Requirements

  • Have taken technically complex ML products end to end, from inception through launch with significant user adoption to sunset. Ideally the products are consumer facing and involve user interface interactions.
  • Have managed a team of software engineers from a product standpoint, tracking progress against a roadmap with tools such as Jira, Linear, spreadsheets or ClickUp.
  • Have run large user-facing experiments on platforms such as Optimizely, Statsig or Eppo, and understand power and statistical significance.
  • Use AI agents in daily work, for example to read code, query company data and prepare leadership dashboards.
  • Understand how ML and AI work, including widely used ML and deep learning packages such as XGBoost, CatBoost, LightGBM, scikit-learn, Keras and PyTorch, and the autoresearch approach.
  • Have prepared and presented to small groups of CXO executives and to audiences of 100+ people at all-hands style meetings in medium to large companies.
  • Can review technical specifications written by engineers and give critical product feedback.
  • Deliver results while working independently with little supervision in a flat organization, where no approvals are needed but results are closely monitored.

This is a hybrid role. You will work in the office 3 days a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Working in the office at least 3 days a week is an essential function of the role.

The expected base pay in the San Francisco area is $148,000 - $185,000. This excludes potential equity, bonus and benefits. Pay depends on qualifications, experience and location, and your recruiter can share the range for your specific location during hiring.

  • Mental health support.
  • Family-building support.
  • Child care and pet care support.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.

  • Your recruiter can explain the in-office perks available.
