Senior Principal Engineer, Platform Engineering

This role sits on Arena, a cloud-native Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Quality Management System (QMS) platform. High-tech manufacturers and medical device companies use it to launch and maintain products under demanding quality and regulatory rules.

Title: Senior Principal Engineer, Platform. Team: Arena PLM, part of the company. Location: San Mateo, CA, hybrid with 3 days a week in the office.

You will help set the long-term architecture of the Arena platform. You will take on the largest technical efforts across the organization, shape platform strategy, lead modernization, and guide adoption of technology that improves scalability, reliability, security, developer productivity, and customer outcomes. This is a hands-on leadership role with real influence over both long-range direction and key implementation choices.

Responsibilities

• Shape the architecture of major areas of the Arena SaaS platform.
• Run large, complex initiatives that cut across several engineering teams.
• Tackle hard problems in distributed systems, scale, reliability, security, and how the platform evolves.
• Lead modernization and raise engineering productivity through better platform capabilities and practices.
• Coach senior engineers and technical leads.
• Work closely with Engineering and Product leaders to turn business goals into scalable technical solutions.
• Assess new technologies, including AI-enabled engineering and product features, where they add real value.

Requirements

• Able to commute to the San Mateo office 3 days a week.
• Deep experience building and running large-scale enterprise SaaS platforms.
• Expert software engineering skills, especially in Java and modern backend architecture.
• Strong grounding in distributed systems, system design, APIs, scalability, security, and reliability.
• A proven record of leading architecture and technical strategy across several teams.
• Able to steer direction through technical leadership without relying on formal authority.
• Excellent communication, mentoring, and decision-making skills.
• Nice to have: Spring Boot and Spring Security.
• Nice to have: Kubernetes and cloud-native architectures.
• Nice to have: experience with public cloud environments.
• Nice to have: GitHub, GitHub Actions, and AI-assisted development tools.
• Nice to have: Scala and/or Python.
• Nice to have: experience with PLM, QMS, manufacturing software, or regulated industries.
• Nice to have: experience with AI-enabled applications, LLMs, RAG, or intelligent workflow systems.

Conditions

Hybrid role, with the San Mateo office 3 days a week.

Anticipated annual salary between $164,000 and $226,000, based on a good-faith estimate at posting. Actual pay may depend on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
