The company is building out its internal AI labs and treats them as shared infrastructure that engineering groups across the company use as tenants. This is a second dedicated networking role on the IT team, working with the existing network engineer in Europe to take on more than one person can handle.
The focus is the hardware and network layer under the AI labs, not the AI or ML work running on top. Your work also covers the day-to-day corporate network, which needs ongoing engineering ownership rather than best-effort upkeep.
The role is based in Silicon Valley and expects regular on-site time at the local datacenter and colocation facilities.
Responsibilities
Design, build, and run the network fabric for the internal AI labs, including high-throughput switching for GPU and compute-heavy workloads and segmentation that keeps tenants separate. Plan capacity and expansion as demand grows.
Own the physical and logical infrastructure at the Silicon Valley datacenter and colocation facility: network fabric, rack and cabling standards, cross-connects, and power and port planning. Work on site for buildouts, changes, and troubleshooting. Run the network at other datacenter locations, including in Europe, where physical work goes through contractors or remote hands.
Provide hands-on support for server and datacenter hardware, including racking, cabling, provisioning, firmware and BMC (iDRAC/iLO) management, and physical troubleshooting. Do the work on site where practical, or coordinate it with third-party contractors and remote-hands services.
Share ownership of the day-to-day corporate network with the European network engineer. This covers offices, LAN and WLAN, remote access, and connectivity between on-prem, colo, corporate, and cloud environments, including site-to-site VPN, AWS cloud interconnects, and SD-WAN where suited. Bring these environments to a consistent, well-engineered standard that keeps routing, redundancy, and performance adequate for both the labs and corporate users.
Work with Corporate and Product Security to put network security baselines into practice: firewall policy, ACLs, network access control, least-privilege segmentation, and secure management planes in every environment.
Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and traffic visibility across labs, datacenter, corporate, and cloud environments. Use it to spot problems early, plan capacity, and guide architecture decisions.
Set network and infrastructure standards, runbooks, and architecture documentation as the function grows into a full team. Automate configuration and routine tasks with IaC and network automation to cut manual work and config drift.
Take part in an on-call rotation for network and infrastructure incidents across labs and corporate environments. Triage and resolve production issues, run root cause analysis, and contribute to post-incident reviews to prevent repeats.
Requirements
At least 5 years in a network engineering role, with networking as the core of your experience.
Hands-on experience designing and running switching and routing in datacenter or colocation environments: spine/leaf or top-of-rack fabrics, VLANs, VXLAN/EVPN, BGP/OSPF, and structured cabling.
Solid experience with firewalls, ACLs, site-to-site and remote access VPNs, and network segmentation. Vendor experience with Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Palo Alto, or Fortinet is expected.
Able to work physically in a datacenter, including racking, cabling, cross-connects, and hardware-level troubleshooting, and to coordinate remote-hands or contractor work at sites you cannot access directly.
Working knowledge of server hardware: provisioning, firmware and BMC (iDRAC/iLO) management, and physical troubleshooting. Willing to take on the compute layer alongside the network.
Experience with cloud and hybrid connectivity (AWS interconnects, VPN, SD-WAN) and how on-prem, colo, and cloud fit together.
Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as SNMP-based tooling, NetFlow, or Prometheus/Grafana, and using them for capacity planning.
Scripting and automation skills with Python, Bash, Ansible, Terraform, or similar. Hands-on network automation or IaC experience is a strong plus. If you lack it, you must show you can learn these quickly and want to.
Prior experience with on-call rotations and incident management.
Solid grasp of network and infrastructure security basics: least-privilege access, secure management planes, and segmentation.
Experience with high-throughput and GPU/AI cluster networking such as RDMA/RoCE, InfiniBand, or high-speed Ethernet is a strong plus. If you lack it, you must show a strong desire and ability to ramp up fast.
Experience with SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similar compliance frameworks is a plus.
Strong communication skills and the ability to write clear standards, runbooks, and architecture decisions.
