Description

The company's Canadian defence and security business integrates electronic systems on commercial and military platforms across aerospace, transportation, defence, security and space.

This senior management role is hybrid, based in Ottawa. You will act as Head of Discipline for systems engineering across the organisation and also manage the systems engineering resource managers.

Systems engineering covers requirements analysis and design, development, integration, test and acceptance, and you will support projects through that full life cycle.

You will drive better practices, processes, tools and governance across the discipline and its sub-disciplines, and be the main contact on complex technical questions. You will coach and mentor engineers so the team can deliver competitive solutions in a multidisciplinary setting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of resource managers.
  • Assign suitable resources to bids, projects and products, and build the team's skills to match.
  • Plan the team's workload over the short, medium and long term.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, career paths and succession planning.
  • Coach, mentor and develop the team, driving productivity, chargeability, quality, continuous improvement and objectives.
  • Make sure timesheets, time off and travel follow company policy.
  • Set up, standardise and evolve processes, procedures and tools for systems engineering and its sub-disciplines: modeling and simulation, human factors, requirements management, environmental engineering and safety engineering.
  • Make sure those processes and tools meet current and future needs for bids, projects and products.
  • Capture lessons learned and share knowledge across the discipline and sub-disciplines.
  • Own the discipline's estimates for bids, projects and products.
  • Implement and sustain the company's systems engineering capability, including planning and management.
  • Define the systems engineering activities subcontractors carry out.
  • Track and report systems engineering metrics, and define technical performance measures.
  • Grow the company's model-based systems engineering capabilities.
  • Do hands-on systems engineering work on bids, projects and products as a team member.

Requirements

  • Hold an engineering degree, or a 3-year technical program diploma in a technical field from a recognised university or college, or be certified as a technologist by a recognised provincial, state or national licensing body in a related field.
  • Have at least 8 years of managing a systems engineering team within the last 15 years.
  • Have at least 8 years of systems engineering responsibility within the last 15 years.
  • Have at least 5 years as a systems engineering manager on a capital or in-service support contract within the last 10 years.
  • Be an expert in at least one systems engineering tool, at least one systems engineering standard, and requirements management.
  • Have at least 8 years as a people or resource manager.
  • Have at least 5 years of managing a budget.
  • Have at least 8 years of managing an engineering discipline, including its policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly in English, both written and verbal.
  • Preferred: a Master's degree in engineering, science or a related field.
  • Preferred: experience managing a budget of at least 1M CAD.
  • Preferred: experience in the defence industry.
  • Preferred: fluency in French.

Conditions

Hybrid work, based in Ottawa.

Occasional national and international travel, about 4 times per year.

Reports to the Director of Engineering.

The role needs direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the Canadian Controlled Goods Program, the Canadian Industrial Security Program, the US ITAR and/or the US EAR. Total target compensation, covering base salary plus the variable target, is $140,000 to $160,000 CAD per year. Where someone falls in that range depends on career history, competencies, skills, performance, the company's salary budget, customer program requirements and internal equity.
