Senior Manager - Machine Learning Engineering

The company is building its next generation of AI search and retrieval capabilities, which power conversational and agentic experiences across its platform.

You will lead engineers and machine learning practitioners who design and deliver scalable search, retrieval, ranking, recommendation, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems that help users find information, generate insights, and get work done.

You will work closely with Product Management, Applied AI, Platform Engineering, UX, and Quality Engineering to set strategy, deliver on the roadmap, and ship AI-powered experiences used by millions of people worldwide.

You will help advance the technology behind AI Search, Knowledge Retrieval, and GenAI experiences while building an engineering culture that values innovation, quality, and business impact.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of software and machine learning engineers building large-scale AI search and retrieval systems.
• Set the strategy, architecture, and delivery plan for search, ranking, relevance, personalization, and RAG.
• Work with product managers and architects to define and ship new AI-powered experiences.
• Build scalable retrieval pipelines using vector search, semantic search, ranking models, and large language models.
• Raise relevance, precision, recall, and overall search quality across structured and unstructured enterprise content.
• Set architectural patterns for highly available, resilient, high-performance distributed systems.
• Lead the building and production rollout of machine learning models and retrieval services at enterprise scale.
• Own operational excellence across the platform, including reliability, observability, and performance.
• Coach engineering leaders and individual contributors toward collaboration, innovation, and technical depth.
• Work with cross-functional partners to assess emerging AI technologies and speed their adoption into customer-facing products.
• Balance near-term delivery against long-term technical investment and platform evolution.

Requirements

• At least 12 years of software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 10 years with a Master's degree, or equivalent experience.
• At least 3 years of engineering management experience leading high-performing technical teams.
• Strong skills in Java or Python and in large-scale distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with search technologies such as Lucene, Elasticsearch, Solr, OpenSearch, Algolia, Coveo, Glean, or similar.
• Experience building and running large-scale retrieval, ranking, recommendation, or search systems.
• Experience with modern AI and ML technologies, including LLMs, embeddings, vector databases, and RAG architectures.
• Solid grasp of information retrieval, search relevance, ranking algorithms, and semantic search.
• Experience deploying and running machine learning models in production.
• Knowledge of cloud-native architectures, microservices, observability, and performance tuning.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence engineering and product leaders.
• Proven record of taking innovative products from concept to production at enterprise scale.
• Preferred: experience building enterprise search, knowledge retrieval, or GenAI products.
• Preferred: experience with personalization, recommendation systems, or relevance optimization.
• Preferred: experience with vector search technologies and embedding frameworks.
• Preferred: experience leading geographically distributed engineering teams.
• Preferred: experience integrating AI capabilities into customer-facing SaaS products.

Conditions

Base pay for this location is $190,900 to $334,100, plus equity where applicable, variable or incentive compensation, and benefits.

Pay is set by the geographic location of the role and may change with work location; the base pay shown is a guideline, and individual total compensation depends on qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.

Work persona (flexible, remote, or required in office) is assigned based on the nature of the work and the assigned work location; eligibility may be checked by measuring the distance from your primary residence to the nearest company office with a third-party service.
